Just b/c it's late and I know this thread will die a natural death (page 2+) before Monday. How is this the same thing? But you know what, I really don't care. I just don't want any newb to take the opinions of a few as gospel. What I take as gospel is linked from the FAQ and I don't see anything on the links I posted from there saying an 80 with 3 open diffs only gets power to the ground from 1 wheel. If Romer links this thread to the FAQ I'll stand corrected. Nuff said, unsubscribe.

When all wheels are on the ground and all wheels have equal traction all wheels are getting power.
Just because the diff is open does not mean only one wheel gets power.
The second one wheel loses more traction than the other all power goes to it.

It's differential basics.

Example using semi bogie axles.
2 sets of rear axles, both axles are turning the wheels just like a full time 4x4.
If you catch a dip just right and the front drive axle wheels come off the ground the rig stops moving. The front drive wheels are now getting all power and they are the only ones spinning, throw the interlock switch to lock the diffs together and the rig now has power going to both axles equally and it moves on.

If by some chance one rear drive axle wheel has a patch of ice under it then the front wheels would be spinning and the wheel on the ice would be spinning.
Engage the rear axle locker if equipped and now both rear axle wheels are locked together and the rig moves on.

You can see that all wheels are getting power to move the rig by looking at the high HP and torque(600 HP/1850 ftlbs) powered rigs.
They go through drive axles tires like crazy if they don't keep their foot out of it. It doesn't wear the tires away it peels them off, there will be rubber all over the place on them, like they have been running through tar.
Not just one axle or wheel but all driven wheel positions.

I guess I wasn't the only one who needed clarification...It's honestly kinda complex.

Exactly haha.

Op,

Open differentials are better on the road in the winter.
Auto locking differentials are terrible on the road in winter, especially in the front differential.
Locked differentials are better off the road.

Selectable lockers are best for a vehicle that sees winter road use and off road use.

The above statement could be full of caveats and footnotes, but that's the crux of it.

I have a fairly long and steep driveway and usually there are a few instances each winter where I would not be able to make it up without both my front and rear factory lockers engaged. The rest of the time not required as you mentioned.

heres my story...i have a 94 land cruiser...no CDL switch...no lights illuminate on my dash when i engage 4low..from the videos i shot with my local club...i always wheel in 4low...i filmed a ledge that made the rear of my cruiser rest on the hitch....(both rear tires @full droop off the ground) i watched the front tires....nothing...i was expecting atleast one to spin....so im thinkin even in 4low my center diff is NOT locked...anyone have any ideas?? ive read all 4 pages and many more threads and everyone swears an 80 series automatically engages cdl when in 4low.....

Check the diff fuse. Bottom right I believe.
Or maybe someone did the 7 pin mod and didn't install a CDL switch.
But yes, it should lock the diff when you shift into low.

In the standard OEM configuration when you shift into Low there is a sensor switch on the transfer case that sends a signal to the CDL circuit to perform the lock. When the lock is successful then another sensor switch is trigger that turns the light on the dash and also disables the ABS. There is a third switch that detects when the transfer case in neutral. All of those switches or time and lack of use become nonfunctional.

There are lots of threads that cover this. One of them is https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/537435-will-cdl-dash-light-still-come-startup-if-indicator-switch-bad.html

The last post from George_TLC has a link describing the 9v battery 'cleaning' method to restore the switches.

Here is a simplified drawing of the CDL system, I hope this helps.

Some times my ABS light comes on....i looked at the fuses but havent tested them yet...im pretty sure im the first owner to take this rig off road and maybe the first to engage it in 4low...my question...would the ABS light that comes on sometimes...would that trip the diff lock actuator into not locking? I didnt think id get as much feedback from you guys like i did...sry to hijack :( ill look on other threads PPC posted...i appreticate the help....all the older technitions here have no knowledge about these 80 series....rarely do they come into the dealership haha

FYI for the OP: the vast majority of this thread is complete misinformation. Honestly, this thread belongs in the garbage, as do many threads on the topic of lockable differentials, power distribution and engine torque in various scenarios. I feel bad for DouglasS. He knows what's what but it seems he's having to dumb it down to get through to some of these guys. Try Wikipedia or similar to answer your questions on this topic.

This thread needs a giant face palm.
