Ok, it's official: my original 72 FJ40 Drum booster is dead. All 4 calipers started dragging quickly and almost caught on fire. Question is: which booster to use for 4 wheel discs and FJ60 master? I plan on ordering from my local Checker buddies who give great warranty service with no questios asked. Also, I vacume tested the booster with a no hose and clamps and got no vacume on the gauge. I want more powerful brakes. I've got 4 runner calipers front and Monte Carlos in the back. Stopping power was ok but not great with the original drum booster but barely acceptable. So, ideas on a great, simple replacement booster?
Hi All:
Get the 1989 V-6 4Runner/4wd mini-truck booster. It will fit-up to the firewall nicely.
I have '78-vintage TLC disc brakes up front and the typical "Monte Carlo" RDB out back. Booster is from a Toyota 4wd mini-truck, while the master cylinder is for a '89 V-6 4Runner. I also have the Wilwood adjustable proportioning valve installed in the rear brake circuit.
This hodge-podge works well. Eventually I will replace the front rotors with some new ones, and the calipers with the bigger 4Runner units. Oh, and I could have done a better job adjusting the proportioning valve for the rear Monte Carlo calipers (I can lock-up the rearend if I try!)
Good luck with your brake upgrade - it is well worth the effort!!
Regards,
Alan
Hey TCinVA,
What part numbers did you buy at Napa? I see they have different parts between the trucks and the 4runners. I have the same setup as you did (disc front drum rear). I am still trying to get my brakes right. Thanks. Oh yeah, mines a 73 FJ40.
