yeah, the 70 is fairly complete.. except for the whole engine, transmission, transfer case thing.
The body looks pretty good as well.
It is a shame to blast off the paint job, I don't really see how to save it.
The under side and interior all have to be stripped and painted /coated.
I have to go out and see what is in all of those boxes and bins.

On a side note, should I start a build thread or just keep this one going?

IMHO, unless you're trying to restore a show queen for top dollar, I say build the 70. What makes the '78 so desired is the features (e.g., disk brakes, etc., which you already have and can upgrade on the '70. So you can have the features of the '78 and the aesthetics of the '70, which I like better like the turn signals, doors, door windows, etc. Also, I think the metal on the '70s might have been better. Why do you have to strip off the paint on the '70? Good luck with it and welcome!

PS-I'd say keep this as your build thread. It's nice to see where everything came from and you're not too far into this thread.

Thanks, If I read you correctly, I should bring over the drivetrain from the 78, including the front and rear?
This would include the disc brakes.
I agree with you on the front doors, I like the hood better also. I would like to change the windshield so the wipers are on the bottom. The only other thing would be the ambulance doors in the back. I like them better.
As far as the paint goes, I don't see how I will be able to media blast the underside as well as the interior without damaging the outside.

Not sure what the blue room is.
Yeah, the FJC started this whole mess.

The FJ Cruiser Forum, commonly referred to as "the blue room" or "Land of Sunshine, Unicorns, and plasti-dip".

I began a quest in 2000 for the perfect 40, a blue 83 with PS and AC, since I've been enamored with since 83.

Looked for years, to no avail, and was stoked when they announced the release of the FJC....then saw it after an auto show unveiling and couldn't stand it.

Bought one, anyway. Overbuilt it, wheeled it, realized it lacked what I wanted in a wheeler and didn't like always being lumped in with FJCs at organized events, so.....

That lead to an 80, which lead to a Pig, which has now lead to a total of 3 Pigs.....and can't keep my mind off a 70, either.

Hahahaha.

Welcome to Mud. :flipoff2: now say goodbye to expendable cash.

And good luck. Subscribed to see how this develops.

I haven't done the swap you are talking about but the 40's didn't see SIGNIFICANT frame and dimensional changes throughout their legendary run... I would think you could make it work relatively easy.

Figure how much time and money it should cost, then double it, and you'll be in the ballpark.

Until '79 when they changed...significantly.

If it were me, I'd leave the '70 as she is-it's beautiful. Then I'd do an Aqualu tub on the '78 and make her a daily driver/Wheeler with no worry about scrapping/denting/rusting her.

Hi all,

Wow! The body on that '70 looks tons better than the '78!

Ignore what I wrote before about swapping the '70 body onto the '78 frame. Just do a drive train swap from the '78 into the '70.

Regards,

Alan

finally got out to look in the boxes.
A lot of good stuff, some bad.
These first are of the new parts that came with it as well as "other" bonuses.

these seats look to be in great condition.
But what happened to the drivers side?
Is there any way to fix this?

Wow, looks like you did well. The black rubber circles are spring bushings. The bolts look like centre pins for greaseable shackles, then I see braided brake lines. That '70 looks super nice.

I picked up a passenger fender today of of cl. Looks to be in pretty good condition.
I finally finished bending up new fuel line. The original ones had old gas in them for a long time, so I thought I would just replace them.
I finished rebuilding the carb and now it is attached. I still need to replace all of the vacuum lines and a full tune up.

On the 70 I blasted some parts just to get them going.
The doors were really loose.
Is it common for the hole in the door to be so sloppy?
I measured .520" in the door and .465" diameter door handle shaft.
I ended up making a sleeve out of bronze for each side. The sleeve goes all the way to the inner door.
When I finished it was very tight. In a good way.
The only issue was the square detail in the handle. It is a little wallowed out.
I will probably do something to fix it. Maybe weld and re cut.
