So the timing is not great (new baby, just bought a 200, garage at max capacity, etc) but my insurance agent who actually is my neighbor (and state farm too, ha) has a client who is selling their 1974 FJ40. She knew I was into landcruisers and gave me their contact info. I know quite a bit about 80s/100s and am beginning to learn the 200 but i am somewhat clueless on 40s. Therefor, @lelandEOD offered to join me to check it out. The owners are the original and it is a factory soft top with a claimed 36000 mi. Lee was a bit skeptical about the mileage but after looking at the overall condition of the truck, this may very well be true. It is being sold because the husband is in poor health and cannot drive it, and the wife has no use for it. There is no immediate family to claim it either.

It truly looks like it sat in the garage for 43 years with just occasional usage. It was unfortunately "upgraded" it the late 80s, early 90s with some ungodly bits of chrome, rear fender flares, and other strange add ons, but all of these look like they can be semi easily removed. The wife did say it was hit on the trail by a Jeep and had to have some body work done to the PS rear rocker. It was then repainted at this point. Some bondo was observed in this area but overall there is not a spec of rust ANYWHERE on the truck. Lee thinks it may still even have the original exhaust system. If the dash is original, there is not a crack on it either. Engine looks pretty good and ran smoothly for a little test drive around the neighborhood. This was my first time driving a 40 and 35mph never felt so engaging! It was really fun to drive.

There is some hideous "custom" interior carpeting too and while on any other truck I would worry this was placed to hide rust, I don't think that is the case here. Upstairs in the attic, I was able to visually confirm the presence of the doors, soft top bows, and canvas for the soft top. I don't know the condition of the canvas. From what we gathered, I believe they are the original owners (have all parts and documentation to support this) and the mileage is correct. I initially did not love the idea of buying a soft top but it looks like a hard top can be fitted as well and the soft top models are much more rare. I don't think there are many original owner, rust free, sub 40k mi 40s out there so if the price is right, I may have to go for it. It will probably sit in storage for 1-2 years until my planned workshop is built, after which I can start restoring it. As for price, I told the seller I would get back to her on an offer. She did not have anything in mind but I think she was thinking low $20s based on some printout she had. I would be more comfortable at $15k. What do you guys think?

Sorry, not the best photos as I was chasing my 2yo son around and only have one shot showing the whole truck. The rest are close ups (some blurry) of specific areas. Lee may add a few to this thread too. I have these 5 to start and am working on uploading another 10 or so.

Holy COW! Buy it.. If you don't, PM me and I'll send the money... THIS WEEK. If everything you say is true, you can't pass this one up. Even at low 20's.

I'M SERIOUS!

It is a legit survivor... even if the PO did Bubba-Hotep a couple things. I've never seen a tub with zero evidence of corrosion. The original owner did glue down carpet in the tub and the front fenders were bobbed in a way I've never seen before... I told Kris that the mileage was most likely 130,xxx rather than 30,xxx, but once I crawled underneath and saw that the brake line junctions still had yellow zinc showing, I changed my mind.

The PO was definitely a subscriber to the JCWhitney catalog in the early 80’s.

Wow. just. wow.

Bobbed fenders. Done so well, I thought it was factory.

The only thing that makes the vintage vinyl wrapped glovebox door more awesome are the Jeepers Jamboree decals dating back to ‘74.

bezel police beware!
Yep. Deduct $369.43 from your offer for that mistake. Then ask how many years it's been like that and deduct #1.99 for each year.

Thanks everyone for the responses! It sounds like if I don't buy it, one of you will track me down for the contact info! My wife is surprisingly on board too, I think she kind of likes 40s. Here are a few more bad photos...

My only concern is going to be what lies beneath the bondo on the repaired PS rear quarter, but Lee was able to confirm that there is still factory metal on the inside so probably just a dent that was filled in. It looks easy enough to cut out and weld in some good metal.

Red is not my color of choice either but if I frame off resto it, I guess I can paint it any color I like. I would like to get the canvas fully restored too but also pick up a hard top and doors so I can run it either way. Going to make an offer in person next Fri so I will keep everyone updated.

A little advice if I may. If you obtain the 40, try and refrain from doing a color change on such a nice vehicle. "No mods, none". This is not one you want to mess with. A hot gun from Harbor Freight will take care of carpet removal. Take your time as not to burn the paint. It can be done. I'm giddy and it ain't even my vehicle.

Ditto. Freeborn isn't my choice either but I'd wait until something ugly comes up on it before I pulled that one apart. Bid low but don't let that one get away. If you decide to sell it because it's just too much money, you'll be able to make money almost no matter what price you get it for.

Good luck!

While this is definitely a beautiful specimen, and well worth the $15-20k numbers people are guessing it's worth, is it a true survivor? My understanding is that a survivor has no modifications other than perhaps few bolt on items easily reversed back to stock (like a header for example). Wouldn't the bobbed fenders on this FJ40 exclude it from a survivor status? I honestly dont know for sure, and I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, just trying to learn.

Agreed. There are some "modifications" that are not simply reversed by unbolting something, like the hood ornament, CB antenna, home made "sliders" that were bolted onto the rocker panels, etc. And its not original paint anymore but a cheap respray....which is why I wouldn't feel to bad about changing the color.

I'm just trying to gather as much information as possible so I know what I am getting into. I do want to fully restore it, but am ok if its not all 1974 parts. Any ballpark figures on what a proper restoration would run, if I do most of the labor? I think the most difficult thing to find would be a shop to replace the 40+ year old canvas.

There are a few people who make repro tops on this board. You won't have any trouble getting a new canvas top if/when the time comes.

"Restoration" is too loose a term to easily quantify. Based on our discussions, I think you should expect to sink another $6,000-$8,000 in a modest refresh to get it where you want to be.

If it were mine, I'd budget for the following:

Misc. maintenance items (belts, hoses, fluids, etc.), replace the soft top/door restore, yank all that funky carpet, conduct some exploratory surgery to determine whether replacement of that passenger rocker is necessary, add disc brakes to the front, replace the wagon wheels with Toyota steelies and a fresh set of 33"s, replace the front fenders, source some correct running boards, add a 4+Products winch bumper, de-chrome that poor bezel, add three-point seatbelts, fill the hole in the hood left by the Chrome Chicken, and a superficial respray of the external body panels (if you are deadset on changing the color, triple the projected expense). The rest of the paint is in such good shape it would be easy and I'd have a real hard time justifying a change to the body color unless I am committed to a full frame-off build.

I hate bondo. It's a royal pain to remove. But I would do just that. A lot of times it's used because it's easier than taking the time to straighten the metal.

Not sure if anyone is making real canvas tops. But doesn't matter since from the mid sixties Toyota was using vinyl not canvas.
