Ok, so yesterday in the mail I got the title for my FJ80. However, when I applied for a custom tag and registration, I was told 3-4 weeks. I get that, as I am patient with bureaucratic BS. Nevertheless, wouldn't it make sense for the DMV to send the title and the tag TOGETHER!??!?!!?

Dont ever try to move out of state with their tags......

Every state is different, but DMVs are the same all over! Coming from NJ to NC, we called the NJ DMV to ask what to do with the plates, and it was like this:
"Plates? what plates, we don't see no plates. Hey Gino, this faciabruto on the phone is asking what to do with his plates. Gino says yous guys no want to be talking about any plates. I swear on the virgin mary, dont call back!"
So we kept the NJ plates.
Now leaving NC, my daughter relocated to the socialist republic of Kalifornia, and there they have a whole cottage industry of companies that, for a fee, will do all the work for you and deal with the DMVs. I gladly paid $400 for them to do it all, returned old plates, insurance, inspections, stickers, more stickers, etc. Took a day and we ended up with everything done, no lines, no bullsheet.

AAA in California will do all your dmv stuff for you... skip the lines and the headache.

Compared to the other states that I have lived in and had to deal with their respective DMVs, NC DMV is not bad at all.

I will add that the DMV folks near the fort Bragg area are way more versed and helpful with out of state transfers than they are up here in Raleigh. I’m assuming because of all the out of state military folks they deal with on a day to day basis.

It took me 4 trips to th DMV to register my old motorcycle I had owned and registered in Vermont for 15 years.
Never issued a title (VT is a no title state for older vehicles) and when it was sold new in 1979 in NY it was a no title state. The people at the Mooresville DMV kept telling me that is not true and I need a title from Vermont
I finally went from Mooresville to a more rural DMV and they were super nice...said I had everything I needed the first time.

Lucky you, as my HDJ-80 was registered in VT when it came to the US. Three DMVs in CLT wouldn't do it. Got the original import paperwork from the seller and it was smooth sailing. I'll tell you this, the subcontract employees are ridiculous. Taking their time, chatting on their Bluetooth...

I always skip in and out of the DMV here after living in California for years. Super cheap in comparison and I am usually in and out within 30 minutes, if not way less. In California, even being Military, the cost to register and taxes on vehicles is insane and the DMV wait times are in the hours. I do think that the way North Carolina handles the title process is ridiculous. In California if you have the Lien release on a loan from the bank, you can fill out the forms for you and the buyer on a vehicle and go on your way without having to have the paper title in hand. Here they make you pay it off, wait for the title and then move on. It makes it a pain as a buyer or a seller if there is a loan/lien on a vehicle making it impossible to buy/sell a vehicle with a lien unless you are over trusting.

Going on three weeks, and no custom tag. Conversely, it took only TWO weeks, to get the custom tag for the HDJ-80, and I did the registration here in Charlotte.

This feels like a rant.
I’ll lighten it up with having only spent 20 minutes in line last week in CLT to register 2 vehicles (as the website won’t play regardless of the browser I use)!! The title line had moved by 2 people in the time it took the registration line to move almost 25. Argh.

Lucky you... which location?
