So just got back from Moab. Did Lockhart basin and poison spider. Great trip. Two things I tried to delicately remove with large rocks: My tow hitch and my spare. I was a little surprised that i never touched my rear bumper, but I did kiss off a couple times with the corners of my tow hitch gussets and since my spare (285 75 16) does hang about 1/2 to 1 inch lower than the hitch into the departure angle, it got touched a couple times too. Luckily no damage to it to speak of. So, on to the question.

Anyone ever run a slightly narrow, more or less full diameter spare under the rear to keep it up a little higher? The 235 85 16 is the closest thing I’ve found so far. It's a touch shorter in diameter than the 285 75, but the narrower width should would get it tucked up in the back a bit more.

I know i know, i should just get a real back bumper and get a swing away, but I had one on my last rig and my logic alarm goes off when i think about moving something you almost never use (spare) to get to the stuff you use all the time (cargo area).

Maybe i can put the spare in the back seat and make a little cargo net for the kids to ride in that goes under the back of the truck where the spare went.... hmmmm lol

Anyway, anyone else running skinny spares and/or have a good spare relocation idea?

As always, thanks in advance!
Chris

Thanks

Thanks guys, only problem is that none on the picts are good on that link. Must be old... i think i can work something out just by what was talked about.

I also run 285/75-16 and wanted a smaller spare...I went with the 255/85-16 as well...BFG makes one in their Mud Terrain model...I also plan on raising my spare as well but the 255 was a good start...I ended up ordering the tire from discount tire direct .com and they have a warranty that is for the life of the tire up to a certain tread depth...so not only do you get the best internet price on the tire(in my opinion) and free shipping but also a warranty on the tire in case you "kiss" a rack to hard :-)
