I have a stock 1HD-T, as does a buddy of mine, but my turbo whisltes louder than his does. One can hardly hear his, mine though quiet, is noticeable.

So what makes the turbo louder than the others? How can one make their turbo whistle louder without modifying the boost etc? :p

I can just feel the respect for me on this board plummet

Admit it or not, most of us love the sound of the turbo. Heck, that's half the reason I bought my truck!:D

Is your exhaust set up the same as his? From what I've read, the less components in the system the more prevalent the sound. I'm considering replacing my aging system with a 3" straight pipe that exits just before the rear wheel. If it's too obnoxious then I'll throw a muffler in line.

Definately, a more free-flowing exhaust will let the turbo sing more. After ditching the stock system and then bolting up a 3" mandrel-bent system on my 1HD-FT, my turbo was heaps louder. It doesn't sound quite like a truck yet as i still have a muffler, but i can always take that out later! :D

exhaust mods, intake mods can change the sound...

on my bushpig i have a custom turbo and i love the sound. my wife, who has not rode in the truck for almost a year, was riding along and when we got home...'this thing sounds terrible, i don't like that wistle'... i guess we will take her car anywhere we go together...

IMOP the more exhaust diameter and overal lenth the more turbo sound you ear.

Both straight pipe my turbo diesel engine, but the 80 with 3" exhaust it's simple much more loud than my Tencha ..

I had an opportunity to drive two identical 1HD-T SUVs. With everything stock, SUV "a" had more turbo sound than SUV "b". I assumed that since muffler, intake and everything was stock, turbo of SUV "a" was perhaps in better condition or perhaps it was CT26B instead of CT26.

I didn't waste time and posted my experience here; I was really amazed.

No leaks, nothing. Moreover, SUV "a" had remarkably better pick-up.

If I had SUV "a" just a little longer, I would have swaped it's turbo with mine. :)

I had a home rigged straight through exiting in front of the rear wheel on my 78. No muffler. It was too much (1HZ-T) noise, way too much! Finally went to one the same length but with a big muffler. Perfect. Just the right turbo noise but not overboard.

Well, I was going to start a new thread asking about the sound of an 1HD-T with a straight pipe.... no need now :D it sounds awesome!

How loud/annoying is it inside the truck with all the windows up? Are my :princess: and kids going to be annoyed?

I'm lacking a muffler on my 60 with a turbo, Not even noticeable with windows up. But if I crack my window I can hear the turbo. I have close to stock routing, which I feel dampens awful sound too. If you go straight it might be annoying.
