I have been watching some of the builds here like Kavik, Weaklink, Freds 40 and others. After wheeling the ruts here in Hawaii, I decided that I wanted more flex and a little more lift for the mud holes. I originaly had installed MAF's 4" OME SR lift kit with medium springs , It was nice and beefy and worked pretty well. The cruiser flexed great and performed pretty good on the trail, but my friend had turned a wrecked 2wd S-10 into a 4wd beast with a lot of flex making me want more. So, here I am after 3 very long days at my friends shop and a SOA 62 that I can't wait to take out. I own him big time for letting me use his shop and tools and helping me out.

I ordered some parts from Ruff Stuff, MAF, Marlin, and CCOT. I was thinking I would have to wait to do the SO until I got back from the mainland because I didn't have enough shackle bolts, but after some persistance from my friend, I decided to get some 3/4 inch grade 8 bolts and make my own on the lathe. I ended up with 4 greasable shoulder bolts for the spring pins and 4 greasealbe shoulder pins like the OME's for the shackles. I ended up with about 2 more inches of lift, making it around 6 inches, and a lot more flex. Any way here are some pics from after we were done.

I still have to get a new front drive shaft and extend the bumpstops and swaybar links. Last night when I drove home, it was the best ride I had ever experienced in my cruiser, even without a steering stabilizer hooked up. I set the pinion angle to 10* and figured I could do a CNT later, I may rethink that now. I ran into the same problem as Kavik with the pitman are and relay rod hitting the springs on full stuff, the reasoning for extending the bump stops.
I want to thank all the guys here for their well documented SO builds, It made the research and parts collecting so much easier. And to my buddy Mark,, who I owe big for helping me do this, but I think he wanted to do it just as much as me.

Incredible. I can't wait to do an SOA on my rig!!

Two questions:
Did you re-locate your shackle hangers while doing an SOA?
Are your OME's dearched or just broken in?

thanks, its sweet victory to see it flex with no binding after all the work.
1. yes I relocated the spring hangers, they are ruff stuffs and the rear was moved back one inch and I thought I had moved the front hanger forward one inch but it ended up in the same location.
2. they are broken in OME mediums, I may take a leaf out of the rear cuz it was kinda stiff when flexing it out. might just need more break in time. I am also considering having the rears dearched a little so the back isnt so high.

I can't believe how much flex you have. I'm gonna be there some day.....

Sweet!! Every time I think i've made up my mind to stick with just a regular 4" lift I see someone with a SO and wanna go that route. Looks great. Awesome flex:cheers:

Lookin' good!

Put some miles on the springs before you monkey w/ 'em. I'm still playing with my stack up.

Doesn't a SOA 60 "feel" just right ?

The sprung over 62 I drove once was like riding in my moms maxima (nice) and it could wheel way harder than my SUA 60.

Congrats it looks great.

thats what my friend suggested about the springs.
Yea the spring over does feel right. Its like letting the dog out of its cage.

Did you ever get a FJ80 pitman arm?

I had the same issue with the pitman arm hitting the driver's side spring. I bought a tool made especially for making the tapered holes for tie rod ends, ball studds and such. I removed the ball studd from the pitman arm and reamed the arm from the topside and I reamed it deep to allow the draglink to clear the frame once I put it back on. (Now obviously this is a compromise since it is already tapered from the bottom up, so going from the top down you will only have 1/2 of the contact area between the ball studd and the hole in the pitman arm.) I then cut the threaded end of the ball studd off AFTER having tightened it with an impact wrench to make sure it was seated firmly in the pitman arm. Then I welded the bottom of the ballstudd to the arm itself, filling in the small gap between the end of the ball studd and the hole in the arm. I rotated the end of the drag link 180 degrees and put it back on the studd. Problem solved. It has been this was for several years, been to Moab many times, etc, etc, no issues. I will never be able to separate the ball studd from the pitman arm, but I may never have to and I can always get a new arm if and when I need it. This will not allow retention of the stock steering stabilizer but it's junk anyway, a stabilizer should go between the axle housing and the tie rod, not between the frame and the drag link; get a real one.

No 80 arm yet. I've been too lazy/cheap to track one down. I already swept off the zerk fitting on the rod end :hillbilly: so further contact will be closely monitored...

I also added 2" bumpstop spacers, and it will still touch. 3" spacers would clear, but I'm greedy for uptravel. So, I plan to remove the spacers altogether once the pitman arm and fender openings are sorted out.

Looks awesome bro!
I cant believe you did it in 3 DAYS!?
Amazing!

NICE... pull one sway bar link when you wheel you'll like the flex even better :D I got 2-3 more inches in out mine that way .... then on the orange 60 i just tossed it :meh::steer::hillbilly:
