I have been watching some of the builds here like Kavik, Weaklink, Freds 40 and others. After wheeling the ruts here in Hawaii, I decided that I wanted more flex and a little more lift for the mud holes. I originaly had installed MAF's 4" OME SR lift kit with medium springs , It was nice and beefy and worked pretty well. The cruiser flexed great and performed pretty good on the trail, but my friend had turned a wrecked 2wd S-10 into a 4wd beast with a lot of flex making me want more. So, here I am after 3 very long days at my friends shop and a SOA 62 that I can't wait to take out. I own him big time for letting me use his shop and tools and helping me out.
I ordered some parts from Ruff Stuff, MAF, Marlin, and CCOT. I was thinking I would have to wait to do the SO until I got back from the mainland because I didn't have enough shackle bolts, but after some persistance from my friend, I decided to get some 3/4 inch grade 8 bolts and make my own on the lathe. I ended up with 4 greasable shoulder bolts for the spring pins and 4 greasealbe shoulder pins like the OME's for the shackles. I ended up with about 2 more inches of lift, making it around 6 inches, and a lot more flex. Any way here are some pics from after we were done.
I still have to get a new front drive shaft and extend the bumpstops and swaybar links. Last night when I drove home, it was the best ride I had ever experienced in my cruiser, even without a steering stabilizer hooked up. I set the pinion angle to 10* and figured I could do a CNT later, I may rethink that now. I ran into the same problem as Kavik with the pitman are and relay rod hitting the springs on full stuff, the reasoning for extending the bump stops.
I want to thank all the guys here for their well documented SO builds, It made the research and parts collecting so much easier. And to my buddy Mark,
, who I owe big for helping me do this, but I think he wanted to do it just as much as me.
