My 88 is down :(

Took it camping over the weekend.. started to lose power as i was going up hill. Felt like it was stuttering while on the gas pedal. Idling was off too and was definitely noticeable when we hit traffic on the freeway... was still chuggin' so i figured i'd keep going until we got home.

Anyways, dropped it off to the dealer the next day to have it checked out. Turns out cylinder #4's compression level was bad.. (93 psi).

I'm now looking for an engine rebuild. the dealer is quoting me around $7k :bang:

I need some recommendations for a cruiser specialist that will help me rebuild my girl! i won't give up on her haha

Maybe now's the time to look into a v8 conversion or turbodiesel? :D

I live in manhattan so anywhere that is within reason.

Thanks in advance guys.

I would absolutely look into a V8 conversion.

The guys at Forge Specialties are in the DC metro: Drop them a line and tell them your situation.

Nathan and Vince do phenomenal work.

Good luck sir.

Could just be a tight or leaky valve.

Adjust them first, then test again.

Further testing is required before jumping to the conclusion that the entire engine is shot.

Thanks for the advice but I did just have a valve adjustment done a couple months ago so I doubt it was that.. But I'll have them look into that once more.

I'll give forge a call as well !

Hey I'm glad you got some suggestions. That is one clean rig. Hope you get it back on the road ASAP! @Kian

Beautiful truck, I would most certainly get a second opinion on the motor before jumping into anything.

Here's an update from the dealer in regards to the engines compression test.

As you guys mentioned.. i'm going to take it somewhere that can do a further analysis on what exactly is happening to Cylinder #4.

Any other opinions/insight would be appreciated.

How close are the other compression test numbers? If it's just one isolated cylinder that's got unusually low compression, it's more likely that you've got a damaged valve or valve seat unless you've got a broken piston ring or something like that. If all of them are low, then I would be more inclined to suggest a rebuild. There is no reason cylinder 4 should wear piston rings out faster than the other 5 cylinders.

EDIT: Sorry, I overlooked the compression test numbers on the bottom of your photo there. So- yeah, seems like the rest of the motor is still in fine order (I'm saying this without knowing what normal compression numbers are, but the rest are all similar). Could be a damaged/broken valve or seat, damaged/broken piston ring, or possibly blown off or leaking injector tip. But seeing as your problem just happened all of a sudden, it's not like your engine slowly wore out and now you're faced with a 7000 dollar rebuild. Something failed, once you find it and fix it, you'll be golden again. If it's not your daily driver and you can do the work yourself, it wouldn't be such a bad hit.

I was going to say that I had a similar problem with my 62. Put some injector cleaner in my fuel tank and it never happened again.

My dealer experiences have all been horrible. You are correct in wanting to take it elsewhere.
