I dont know anything about winches, but the 12 71 40 i bought has one on it. I believe it works, but want to hook up everything first. I am posting three pictures of it. What can you tell me about it. Looks like it is missing some of the things that hold the cables to the control arms.

Sorry if it sounds like I dont know what I am talking about...but that is becasue I don't

Anyone?

Looks like a 5687 (Bellevue). There's a thread here in this section. Search for it.

I have not. Thanks guys! Appreciate your help!!

Yeah....I went ahead and filled it with gear oil and it promply leaked it all over the floor of my garage....neat. Looks like parts are not available for this. I know I will at least need gaskets.....

Should I just put this old dog to sleep?

Heck no. Give it to someone that will fix it. It's still a good winch. Just requires a little more work.

What do you mean by fill? The 8274 only takes like 5 or 10 oz. of oil, hardly enough to "fill." I would imagine the Belleview is the same.

I'll take it!

Making gaskets is pretty easy, just lay a piece of gasket material over the part and tap around the outline and interior holes with a ball pean hammer. Then use a utility knife to cut the outlines out.

Most places that sell bearings/seals can match the old ones to current part numbers.

The electrical stuff can be replaced with newer relays etc.

Well sub.....add that to the list of dipship things that I have done. Maybe one of these days I will get my act together....I filled that SOB FULL of lube....

Learning from my mistakes and there are many my friend....many.

Well...hooked it up this evening and I am not sure what is going on. Ran the power to the "relay" on the passenger fender and then continued it on to the positve lead onthe starter.....nothing. Then thought I would clean up the end on the winch itself and touched it with a wrench and turned a bit and the sparks flew. I also heard the motor run for a second! But for some reason it does not like the way I have it hooked up....any ideas?

Hate to give this "redneck" type of advise, but my 8274 leaked and I used lithium grease in it for years. Never so much as hiccuped. Not sure I'd recommend it, but it worked fine for me until you have the time or desire to change out the seals.

The old Bellevue needs one positive cable from the motor. Sounds like you need to double check the quality of the ground...battery to frame needs a 'serious' cable.

I powered mine off a single Ford starter solenoid for many years.

"Hook up is easy. They ground thru the frame, so you only need one power cable from the winch motor to the controller switch, then to the battery. Bought the winch, but didn't get a power-lever? (Or, like me, tossed it at some point when you realized new cables were too darn much $$$?) I used a single $6 Ford starter solenoid switch for about 8 years with no problems. Knowing what I do know about electrical current, I would now hook two in parallel to distribute the current between them. I did however always carry a spare solenoid in my parts supply, just in case."

Almost like I wrote the article ;)

Took the cables that are supposed to go under the steering wheel to control the winch to see if someone could make me some new ones. Struck out at both places and they both sould not steer me in any direction to get them done....

yeah....kind of like really heavy duty bicycle gear shfter cables. All three of mine are frozen in place and the housings are all cracked and NONE of them have the ends on them. Can someone out there take a picture of theirs so I have something to use as an example. Specifically the ends of all three. Are there supposed to be barrel ends on them?

Do you still have Don's (helped on your Pig) number in Wichita? He's got at least one of Bellevue/Warn that he ran on his 40 for many years. Shoot me a PM and I'll send you his mobile, he'd be happy to help.

Actually...yes i still have his number. I will give him a holla! Is this Chris?
