So I eventually took the plunge and bought the BJ42 after looking around for a couple of months. Bought this from the South Australian/Victorian border so it was a "blind" purchase as I am based in Sydney. I got a mechanic down there to have a quick check and a once over so when it arrived there were no big surprises!
It drives well and has had a recent respray and has been bogged up in one or two places but doesn't seem to be too much problem areas (so far :-)
Anyway, I've got to install 4 new tyres and as it has no powersteering I was wondering what are the widest wheels most would install on a non-power steering 40. I'm looking at installing Sunraysia rims 15 inch x 7 inch wide on BFG AT 235/75's....
What are others thoughts?? Or will my arms be pulled off!!!

Nice rig mate and welcome to Mud :flipoff2: Good to see another Aussie here on the site. I had a 76 model years ago and was running 31x10.5's on it with no dramas. What are your plans for her.

Ken

Thanks Ken...no big plans as of yet just thinking about a few short trips to the Blue Mountains for some off roading and camping and maybe a bigger trip down to Mt. Kosziosco and the highlands down there!
As regards work on the truck the only thing I really wanna do is get some powersteering on it but I'm in no rush to do it, just sometime in the future

you can get a 40 series power steering set up for around $1000-$1500 or swap to 60 for around $500 and some fiddling around. if your on 33's 40 steering set up is okay anything larger and you will hit the track rod that goes from the box up to the front cross over thingy unless you get a huge offset rim.

there's a few guys with 'armstrong' steering running 33's but think they are looking at p/s options as well. I'd stick with 31's and enjoy it until you drive one with p/s then you'll be racing out to get p/s added.

Nice 40, bar and winch combination are extremely sought after.

skinny 33's are fine with non PS, but they are nicer with PS

Thanks guys, will keep my eye out for a 40's power steering setup!!
Can't wait to get my 40 registered and on the road this week! I'm like a kid at Christmas!!

I used to run 35x12.5s with no power steering on the HJ47, but the difference is night and day, especially when you go to 31s on 60 series power steering! In my opinion, this would be one of the best mods to a 40 you can do.

Oh, and also, welcome! :flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2:

Welcome to mud, I run 31x10.5 with no power steering at the moment, have an OEM 40 series steering box and reservoir ready to install, will be interesting to feel the difference after 20 years of driving without. I make sure the truck is rolling before turning the wheel, otherwise a can of spinach is required.:steer::flipoff2:
