Update
Yep... there's been some work.
First, CCOT came through and replaced the mis-marked LH mirror with no issues. Shipped out a new one along with a return shipping tag for the old one. The mirrors themselves are not bad for the price, overall fit and finnish is pretty good. Although the right mirror is simply flat glass, not convex, which would have been a nicer product. IMHO, they should state this on the product page of their site.
On to other work. I've replaced all of the old vacuum lines, check valves, etc. Many of which were checked, cracked and some were just plain broken. And although starts are improved, it's still not where it should be. So I contacted Mark's Off Road and scheduled an appointment for a carb rebuild. Sunday I pulled the carb off and on Monday I headed over to Mark's after work.
Mark was great and was kind enough to do an initial autopsy on the carb while I was there. It was in bad shape. Totally gummed up, clogged, bent, tweaked and generally FUBAR. But savable. Should be ready on Friday. I can't wait to get it back on the truck and see how it runs.
In the mean time I've not been idle on the truck. I've pulled the dash apart; Pulled the crash pad off, pulled the glove box out, pulled the gauge cluster out and the center pod out. I've done this for three reasons; To prep the crash pad for a new cap (the original is in pretty bad shape), to clean up the wiring under the dash (looks like several half-assed stereo installs, but not too bad otherwise) and to generally give it a really good cleaning. The 28 years of dust, pet hair and ash has got to go!
So, hopefully this weekend I can get the carb back on, the dash cleaned and back together and see how well this thing runs then. I'll also pull a vacuum test as well as a compression test this weekend to make sure there are no more basic hidden issues.
Upcoming projects:
I've ordered a carpet kit, rear retractable seat belts and a tuffy box (secure storage and CUP HOLDERS DAMN IT!). Once they've arrived I want to start pulling the interior out and start getting the comfort and safety levels up. A bedliner layer and a dynomat layer are definitely in order before the new carpet goes in. The big question I have is on seats.
Recover the existing frames? Or go aftermarket? If I do recover the originals, should I do the
SOR complete vinyl kit along with their
front foam? Should I go with the
CCOT cloth kit combined with the SOR front foam? Or the
CCOT vinyl kit? What about the complete the
METRIC TLC all leather kit? And, has anyone seen a rebuild kit for the rear seat? Something that improves support and comfort for the wee ones in the back? Or is it really just a cover over the old springs? Obviously there is a big price difference in these plans, but in my opinion comfort, support and usability are high priorities.
Maybe I should just put aftermarket fronts in, get a local interior shop to do the rear seat and door panels and call it good. Obviously the seats require a lot more thought. Any input you guys have is welcome.
I'll also be upgrading some of the wiring under the hood as well as some general clean up. New battery cables are definitely in order, as is new
wiring harness for the headlights.
Im hoping that, once all this is complete, basic drivability and reliability will be taken care of. If not, I will continue to focus on these areas. But if so, this is where the fun will really start.
More to come...
