Iv'e had my 95' FJ80 for about 7 years now, driven it all over the place. But it has always been so loud inside. I am running 35's with a fairly aggressive tread, but it seems like that is only part of the problem. I don't really hear wind noise, but it seems like I hear everything outside the truck while I'm driving.
Anyone else deal with the noise, and what did you do to lessen it.

Im about to order some dynamat, rip out the carpet and put the dynamat in the doors and floor.
What you all think?
 
A couple of people on here have gone really wild with sound deadening. Pulling headliner, pulling all seats/carpet, 2 layers on the doors (one inside, and one under door card, etc, etc.

I will agree you definitely hear everything. I've started adding deadener to mine. Only done the rear doors so far but plan on doing the floor, front doors, and quarters once my carpet arrives. I'm hoping it makes a noticeable different. Just replacing the window channels got rid of a ton of wind noise.
 
Ooh. Thoughts on Kilmat? I've been bouncing back and forth between a couple of the "cheaper" options other than dynamat. I think most stuff from Amazon is shipping later in April now though. My quarantine supply gathering game was way off.
 
Lots of info about sound deadening. Based on what I read, I did the following:

All 4 Doors, rear cargo area, and side panels of rear cargo area.

Material used was Noico Butyl material (heavy foil type stuff), Noico foam over that (aim for 100% coverage where possible), and Mass loaded vinyl over that.

To be honest, still pretty loud inside. Definitely an improvement though. The sound proofing in the doors was nice. Got rid of the coke can sound to them. Especially when opening and closing.

Sounproofing rear area was most effective at blocking road noise. Also incredibly easy to access and complete. Removing the plastic side covers in the rear is also super easy to access as well.

When I remove front seats to have them upholstered, I plan to do that area as well with same approach mentioned above.

I liked the price on the Kilmat and that it did not stink! It's cheap enough you could double layer it. The doors now sound solid and i did it because i added speakers, Alpine deck and Amp and wanted good sounds! Helped a lot on the sound quality and i fixed some vapor barrier issues! :bounce: :clap:
 
Another thought after getting a set of new tires and an alignment...
The previous tires had a pair that were on the front, I neglected alignment and they were a mess. Thought my diff was going south or something. Then the diff gasket started leaking, seemingly confirming my shoot from the hip diagnosis.

Took it into my pro mechanic ( Eric at Specialized here in Urbana) - as opposed to me the shade tree mechanic - and he took it for a spin, came back and said I need new tires - and an alignment. I put the front tires on the back and the funky rumble moves to the back seat. Hohray! In the meantime, my mom gets very ill, taken to the hospital and dies without anyone physically present, although the nurses' did an exceptional job of using an iPhone with Zoom, on the day Eric tore into the truck and put new TRE, etc on. We get new KM3s on the way and on the truck today at the alignment shop.

Amazing quiet (as well as smooth). Now, some of that may be in the difference between KM2 and KM3 flavors, but if you'd been riding in our 80 for the last six months, you'd just realized that an alignment could have saved the tires and have made them substantially quieter. What's the wear pattern looking like. Got alignment? Something worth considering, especially if you need new tires or alignment anyway.

Thanks, even dying is tough right now. The test came back a few hours after she died as negative for the virus, but they had to treat her like it was the hot zone due to her symptoms, etc since they did not know she was safe from that before she died. We're holding up, but it's the middle brother who's taken up most of the load of caregiving. He and my SIL are readl glad they don't need to go into isolation, which would've just compunded the mess. We're lucky compared to some who get it. Take care to thank all the essential workers and healthcare workers, as well as the better known first responders. It will be OK...eventually, I guess.

It was my fault for not paying attention, but it's OK now. It was a zen-like day for me because of everything going on. It just occurred to me that one of my inisghts - freshen truck with nice round tires - was so amazingly quieter. Not that lots of dynamat is a bad thing. But you need good tires and if it's also quieter, then it's all good. Things are smooth and quiet on new rubber and I definitely needed it.

Greentruck , sorry for your loss. That’s rough, glad no quarantine for your brother though. A little consolation.

Good info on the tires, mine are almost gone, and I need a new set anyway. So that’s a coming.
But I am ready for a quieter truck. I’ve got a couple of long trips planned, and would be nice to have it less of a roar inside.
After reading several reviews, I’m going with Nioco sound deadener and noico red foam cover (where both can fit)
That will be great for sound, but also temperature inside the cab. I live in Oklahoma, keeping the heat out will make it
Much nicer. Also keeps cold out in winter.
 
Just doing the dynamat type deadener doesn't do much for sounds. Those are for adding mass to panels to keep from vibrating or kill resonance.

You need something like a mass loaded vinyl to help with the outside or road noise.
