Bought the wife an 80 for a DD, love it so far, it's a 93, no diff locks. Anyway it seems to go into neutral just a bit on the 2-3 upshift, normal throttle, under hard throttle it shifts hard and no slippage. PO just had $800 worth of maintenance, included was a trans service. Is this something that I should address or SOP?

Congrats, I just bought a 94 for the wife, I find any excuse to drive it. Enjoy

Butch, my 95 also shifts very hard. I have replaced the trans fluid with mobil 1 syn to see if that would help to no avail. I just figure it's good hard shifting.

My wife saw right through thay ploy and gave me the 80 after a couple of months. You don't want to do that becuase the 40 will start to gather dust once you've spent some time in the 80.

THere is an issue with a flare on the weak, girly pre-95 transmissions. I own one of the good ones, so I haven't paid attention, but you can do a search on the 80s forum and get some info on it. It is relatively common.

You might try the sea-foam trans additive, I've heard good things about it.

Have the same problem on my 93, referred to as flaring by Slee. Sometimes it can continue to degrade and become more of a problem but with alot of rigs its just there and something to think about but not worry unless it continues to get worse. If you do a search there have been numerous suggestions as to how to address this particular situation, unfortunately to be sure it is fixed is very pricey$$$$$ if you get my drift. Also mine does it between 1 and 2 not 2 and 3. Anyway if you want more info Cristo and Robbie are the authorities on the topic AFAIK.

Ok, so I'm thinking transmission Toyota (Hino) saw fit to put in a bus vs. transmission designed for a 4Runner. Which one was girly now :flipoff2:

My 93 was shifting pretty hard also before i replaced my cat converters. Now it shifts very smooth since I had them replaced. This is something you might want to check.

I'm about to replace the valve cover gasket, heater hoses, radiator flush, new belts. Hope that helps things a bit.

Ummm....let's see....the girlie tranny to me is the one with all these flaring problems and solenoid problems. I can live with a little chatter (although mine doesn't even do that). :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Wtf are you guys talking about? You replaced your cats and now your trasmission shifts smoother? How does a valve cover gasket have anything to do with shifting? or is there some mass theory of relativity that I'm not quite up to speed on...

PS- congrats on the 80 purchase, Butch, and welcome to 80's land..

I see plenty of older 4runners driving around and hardly any buses.8)

This is what I consider the problem, not the fact that it shifts fine under throttle..........

Nah nak, i was thinking that i have too much other s*** to replace now to even think about the cats, and i don't see how the cats would affect shifting either. Guess i didn't state it very well.

The computer senses engine load through a bunch of different factors and adjusts many things including shift points based on that info. Plugged cats, vacuum leaks, engine misses could all cause shifting problems on a newer car.

Probably not the problem on a 93, but it could happen.

Prolly because the don't sell Hino in the states - just Asia, Middle East, Africa, S. America ... you know - all those places that are easy on vehicles. BTW - the rest of the world was still running around w/ a real transmission when you bought your girly one :D

Concrete,

Combine the above with your reply in another post, saying that you could only check the transmission when cold, and it's full, I suspect that your tranny fluid is a bit low. Try adding half a pint to see if it helps. As how to read the dipstick, wait for a minute or two on a level surface before reading it (ofcourse, also after fully warming up the tranny - say driving around for 15minutes); I always take the lowest reading around the stick to be the correct level.

Thanks, sj, i will try. I did get a little confused when trying to read it while running. It just seemed as i pulled the stick out it would smear all the way down the stick so it was tough to get a true reading. I have two more quarts of Mobil 1 syn sitting at home.

Great. Quickest damn way to kill a forum....let Texican and TJK in. May as well jump in the crapper now.

Best way to fix the pos :princess: trans is to take it wheeling and beat on it a bit :flipoff2:

hmm, isn't this like 2 80's you've bought in the last few weeks now? Could be a trend.

Yes exactly Flaring as I had previously said, If the problem gets worse you have a new baby tranny in your future, if not it might go on for 100K and you will never experience it get any worse and the truck will perform admirably. The tranny in the 93 is just fawkin fine no matter what these :princess: 's say.

OH

buy the way............ :D

80's land is going downhill fast.............................. :flipoff2:
