Friday, Aug 8th
The week was winding down, and honestly, you could feel it—kind of like how you can feel me dragging through writing these daily recaps. The morning routine was predictable: coffee, Ian. People packing up, wave goodbye, the KOA slowly emptying as rigs rolled out for the long drive home.
Game plan: Ian and Maggie were taking a crew up Corkscrew to Silverton and then over to Ophir. Rus and I decided to rerun Red Mountain, which eventually drops into Ophir where we’d link back up.
Red Mountain looked like a bulldozer had a bad day – bumps all rearranged. Still an easy cruise. Super chill run, except for the part where I found myself actually missing the prairie. (Yes, that’s sarcasm dripping harder than my T-Case.)
Rus led us up to Ophir Pass while I played trail paparazzi, snapping shots of his ’73. We stopped at the top, soaked in the views, then cruised down just the two of us. Maggie and George were ahead somewhere—we could hear them on the radio but they were at least twenty minutes ahead. Ian and fam stayed at the lake by Hurricane/California Pass.
Back at camp, we executed the “cook whatever’s left in the cooler” and started packing. Then it was over to Ian’s for one last campfire. Ian and I kept up our tradition: “I’ll hold your beer, you drive my rig.” Which translated to me taking Paul for a spin. That 3FE is no joke—smooth, strong, and cushy like a La-Z-Boy on 33s. Rus took a turn too, and I just kicked back in the backseat while Ian spun CDs like it was ’95 (got my beer back for that thank you very much).
Called it, said goodbyes, some packing, and some half-hearted sleep. What a week. Cheers to any SAS Directors lurking here—worth every mile, bump, smile, and beer.

It is a great event, fall leaves are in full color, up in the hollar of western Virginia and West Virginia
Thanks, Bryan. Lee (Unimog Man) said that Z-looking road is permanently closed off. Something about it makes me want to check it out next time, even if only by foot.
