My experience with Discount Tire

I've never used DT and like you I usually do it myself when it's possible to save the tire.
Oh, and BTW, I pull the tire and put in a patch on the interior. I do NOT do the plug insert things. I had a very bad experience with a plug a LONG time ago, running 110 MPH in an old truck on 33" bias ply mud tires.......

The centripetal force at that speed threw out the plug.

I've primarily owned Land Cruisers and 4Runners so the only time I've ever seen that speed was on an airplane. :)

Its also dependent on the lug nut type, not just wheel type. Stolen from @NLXTACY 's site:

All I can say is that when working on cruisers have never torque a lug nut that high. Have always done 75 on all years, regardless of the lug style. I was told by Toyota guy who was on corporate side for maintenance that the 109 is for steel rims and is a misprint for aluminum. It would be interesting to know if the people who have had lug studs shear if they were torqued to the high number

I went to discount tire 3 times. The first two times I had to get studs replaced because they sheared them either removing or installing the wheels. The third time I had 3 studs get sheared off when my new wheel came flying off doing 60 down a dirt road due to the wrong lug nuts....

It has been over 15 years ago since I worked for Discount Tire but still go there as a customer.

They do have great customer service but have found myself watching the guys in the bays to make sure they actually do the work right because they do not always do everything properly. Overall, installing tires isn't really rocket science nor is fixing flats or balancing. I feel the guys working in the bays get pressured to work so quickly by the upper management that quality of service is lacking at times.

My last experience there was pretty good though. They actually did everything I expected them to do properly.

They’re great for price and service. But because they don’t do alignment I buy my tires from a shop that’s local that does. They also are a couple of bucks cheaper on the tire and the mounting and balancing is a few bucks less too.

Edit: I also hate their ‘we’ll beat any price’ crap. Just give everyone a fair deal. Don’t make me shop around and force you into it.
