I have to admit that doing it is a little scary and frustrating. But start with the lines that you can figure out easiest (like the passenger side VCV). From there work on the stuff that connects around the carb. Once you start doing that it will all of a sudden "click" as to where things go. Really there are only a couple lines that go from one side of the engine to the other (both from the distributor to the carb almost directly). It took me about 4hrs straight to route everything and a couple of misrouted lines that I picked up after studying the documents.

One of the best pieces of advice I can give after doing this is that know where all the items, bolts, etc are. Know what you are removing and what will be staying and work slowly. I did mine over about 2 1/2 days starting on it late one Friday night just kinda getting things sorted, all day Saturday, and almost all day Sunday. Then Monday morning was spent checking and rechecking everything and doing some carb adjustments.

Also, couple good things you will need:
- fine tip sharpie (used to label things)
- painters tape (I used this to mark lines so I knew what was going where and did so on both ends)
- exacto knife with a nice sharp blade (this saved me from breaking any valuable nipples)
Then don't forget to go to the hardware store and grab:
- rubber nipples (they were the yellow ones at NAPA and were like $.99 ea)
- 3mm T fitting (this is used on the gas filter valve that is in the intake manifold)

Yes, used that one.
Just not clear what i should do with HIC valve as i am not using factory air cleaner housing.

That is a difficult one since you dont have the factory air cleaner and I am assuming you don't have the stock AISIN carb? I am pretty sure Klinetime has desmogged and is using a weber so maybe ask him or check his build thread.

Search this thread. Not sure how to add a link to it with the iPad app

"My Desmog thread keeping lots of pics"

There are some great reference pics with labels on this thread.

Joe E has an Aisan carb, and a non-US aircleaner.

No HIC valve, no problem. Ignore it and carry on.

Thanks Jim for chiming in, i was gonna drop you an email.
I figured i could run without out it because that's what i did last time with the Weber desmog.
But after reading this thread, your points and the emmisions manual i was thinking that the HIC purpose was that it vaccum held the flapper open to draw warm air off the manifold until it got hot. It then dropped the flapper then it drew a small amount of fresh air into PCV system. Right or wrong?

Likewise, I am running a non-OEM air cleaner setup so I have capped the HIC. Also running an HEI dizzy so I have deleted the VCV on the passenger side since there is no vac line to hook to off the HEI. Seems to run good. Not sure if this setup is correct though.

HIC does not have anything to do with PCV operation.

It does control the hot air door on the air cleaner, and raise idle speed in very hot weather.

If the air cleaner does not have a HIC valve, then it doesn't have HIC and is ignored.

The pass side vcv's purpose is to draw dry cabin air through dizzy cap to alleviate fumes and moisture build up. If you don't run a stock cap with the vent nipples, it serves no purpose.

I will say this though.
I ran a pre JimC hack desmog with a weber back in the 90's. I did not realize the importance of the pass side vcv so left it off. After a couple years one day driving home from work, the truck just shuts down. Wouldn't start, left me stranded. Had no spark.
I get it home and pull the cap. Inside the cap the dizzy is completely rusted up in pieces. Learned a valuable lesson to always run with a working vcv system.

Copy that.
It's history. :hillbilly:

OK, just finished this monumental thread! Talk about getting a phd.....Took 3 days. Bought an ill running '85 last week and have been obsessed with desmogging it. I have desmogged my '79 fj55 many years ago before the internet, then about 5 years ago a '76 2f I put in my fj45. But this fj60 with it's spaghetti factory BS and it's such a nice rig and I didn't want to do anything dumb and screw it up...... But tonight, thanks to Jim C and all you other guys I found that my hvac, no, my vsv on the pass side was all disconnected. The vsv was clipped onto it's bracket, but the hose from the dissy was just open and the vac line from the drivers side was just unhooked and laying there. The Tee on the line to the pcv was open to atmosphere.... No wonder it had 12" vaccuum on my mighty mite and idled like total ****. The Tee in the line to the dissy cap was missing so I thought od soldering one together with copper tubing and fittings etc....I had plugged some of the obvious stuff when I found it, but only after reading all this did I understand what was what. I saw an open end of a small hose down by the charcoal canister and I said to myself... Voila!~ another open hose to connect to something......But, it was the missing plastic tee with 3 hoses still connected to it that had fallen off or blown off and was caught by the charcoal canister. I knew without looking at the computer exactly what they were! I hooked it all back up, eliminating two good sized vac leaks and it runs So much better. I took it for a drive and I have declared it good enough to live with until I gather all the components to do a proper desmog in the spring when it's a bit warmer. What I'm trying to say here is this... All this stuff was just meaningless sphaghetti to me the other day, and I NEVER thought at age 60 I'd get any of this, or be able to figure it out. Now I can sit in the house after work and watch tv, and desmog it in the spring. Thanks So much all of you!

Hey Jim...sent you an email last week about my carb and dissy. Just making sure you got it.

That's funny. I just picked up an 86 off of Orcas on the 5th. I am hoping to start my own desmog here soon too.

What color is the one you got on Orcas? This one was sitting in my neighbor's woods for almost 2 years after he moved to California. I bugged him enough so he finally caved in. Scroll down a couple pages and I have a thread about it called 'new to 60s, but not LCs'. Hoping to pass through Snohomish with it on Friday or Saturday. Good luck with your desmog. For now, I'm re-inventing the air cleaner in my mind....

Ok I finally dove into this project, I'm not gonna lie I was and I am still terrified. Ordered the plug and cap set from jim c today, I only had time over the weekend to pull all the hoses and all the crap on the ds. Still have no clue what all of it is or what it did but hopefully I will figure that out as I put it all back together. I do have to say it all started to make more since as I started cutting and removing those hoses, I felt power. I'll post some pics tomorrow or Saturday hopefully gonna get all that other crap out, but I have a question do I still need the charcoal canister?

As I understand it, you need to keep the charcoal canister. It works with the venting of the fuel tank. Someone please correct me if that isn't right.

That is correct. Most of our charcoal canisters are rusted through and dead but there is an 80 thread about a duralast replacement that will work, slightly larger but the guys have had good results.
