My axle doesn't love me anymore...

Has this ever happened to anyone? My wife was going downhill, just over the continental divide of course, at over 50mph when she lost brakes and then clutch with a log truck right behind. Some how she stopped. She, our 5 yr old boy and 8 year old dog are still here. I am looking for another rear axle and an 80. It's time to grow up, a little. ( I have a 78 40 for sale or trade on that note) There was plenty of oil in the differential. The truck has 278,000 on it, but I would have never expected this. I have had a little play in the rear end, where you hear a ting before you get going. Perhaps that was a sign. What happened to that c clip? Trade me your 80....

Howdy! Looks like the C-clip wore right thru the axle!! I fractured one between the side gear and the inner axle bearing, but I was lucky, as it happened in a parking lot. John

I guess rear disc brakes probally would have helped to keep the wheel in there, or a full float.

My wife would have drove that thing home on three wheels and said "It's pulling to the left" as she threw me the keys.

I guess axles break just due to age and metal fatigue.

I'm glad that everyone is alright! I bet that'd be scary, looking in the side mirror and seeing a tire sticking out that far!

Just one more justification for me to get a full floating axle.

Right when I got my 62 it needed a third and in a BIG hurry I changed it out . lol what I did was I put in the pin and c-clips but forgot the sleeve or whatever you call it and the c-clip fell right off(drivers side) and the axle came out around a curve...dumb ass move.

No damage just lost my pride.
