a project to use it on.

So, I see you used a red Solo cup to measure the gear oil.
The only one I could find was this one.

Lol. Maybe not

opps, sorry, cup I used was not a solo cup, just a red off brand cup...

Make sure you use it regularly, or at least free spool 10’ of the LI emin and out a few times once a month to coat the gears in the oil from the sump in the lower half of the clam shell housing. That’s what they told me at WARN.
When I had the same problem, and had only used it once in 3 years. I couldn’t pull the free spool clutch out, so I removed the top half and this is what I found.

Yum. Ordered new clutch disengagement handle assembly and cleaned most of the rust off the gears.

Thats crazy for a newer Warn winch...

Agreed. But due to the fact that the gears are not covered in grease( which I believe they should be) and that there is moisture in the air in the case, rust will accumulate rather quickly.

I wonder if I should pull it back apart and fill the case partially with a marine grease. What could that hurt? Hell, our barifields are packed in grease, not oil.

This is the oil I used for case.....good for moisture and water intrusion
