My 8274-50 won't free spool?

Ah, you are correct sir !! Wow, thank you. I was putting 2 & 2 together and getting 5.

There is an article in my recently received, Feb 2017 issue of FourWheeler mag that also gives instructions on how to get an 8274 free spooling again. I was trying to combine that info up with Posers instructions...but was coming out with the incorrect conclusion. Must have had a cup of 'dumb a**' this morning instead of coffee.

I will get after this not tomorrow but the next day. Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

John
Hi. I cant pull out the free spool knob on my 8274. It works in and out but only with the remote.
What did the article say to do?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Hi, Chris @boerboel313 I am by no means an expert on our 8274's...and mine is still somewhat difficult to pull out, even after cleaning it up etc...but it does pull out on free spool. My suggestion would be to try to do just what Poser said in post 5 of this thread. Also refresh what was said in post # 9 & 10. This got mine to free spool again...but I still opened it up & cleaned things up a bit.

On more thought: go on line & see if you can pull up an article from the Feb 2017 FourWheeler mag on disassembly of the 8274. That's what guided me thru the process. It's a good article with lots of pics and good instructions.

Awesome. Thank you.

I'd like to know how water got in here. Isn't this a semi-closed system? And there's a seal to prevent water from leaching along the clutch shaft.

This is what I found. and I believe I need to remove the brake assembly in order for the clutch's housing plate, T handle, and assembly to come clear of the winch body in order to replace part number 8326.
I probably need to add a bit of grease in that compartment before sealing it back up. What kind and how much?
Should I remove the entire cover to clean out the entire gear housing compartment? If so, do I have to remove it from the bumper? If that's the case, I'm in no physical shape at the moment to remove it. It will have to wait a month or more.

Wow, thats a newer 8274!...surprised to see that much rust/water in there...

The water is usually enters in 2 places... where the motor goes into the top case and another area is where the winch drum goes into the lower case.

Your best bet is to take top case off and get out water, clean it up and fill with new oil, if not its going to ruin gears and bearings if water left in there...

Yup, was installed by Rebel Offroad here in SOCAL about 3.5 years ago.
Do I need to remove It from from the bumper? Do I need to remove the motor to remove top half of the gear housing?
Thanks for your input.

I don’t think you will need to remove it from the bumper. But you will need a way to suck out the water as there is no drain on the lower half. The motor will come off with the top housing, no need to separate the motor. Pull it off and check it out, needs filled with non detergent 30 weight IIRC

Yep, 30 weight...and only a small amount, 6oz I believe.

This is how much oil fits in...this is just below drum seal....black line on red solo cup...

Oh, and how I measured it was when I disassembled and cleaned lower case I filled it up with fluid to the bottom of drum seal then poured into a solo cup to know how much to fill...no guessing ;)

Unless the winch has been underwater...it isn't coming in past any seals. There is air inside the case, the case itself is cavernous compared to other winch types. There is always moisture present in the air. So it naturally condensates.

Thanks all. Never been under water but plenty of pressure washing. Cover that came with it really doesmt work well the the ARB front bumper.
Will jump on it once parts arrive. Hopefully tomorrow.

Part just arrived.
So, I guess I have no excuse not to jump right in.

How the hell did this get so rusty? Doesn't make sense.

Seems like almost no oil in the bottom, the last pic.

To remove these gears (covered in rust), I'm guessing I need to pound out this retain bar? Large hammer and pinch?

Or maybe I should just leave those gears in the top half of the case alone. The vid I watched they left them in place. Does make cleaning the rust off the gears more difficult. What a pain in the ass.
Maybe if I'd run the 8274 on a regular basis it would have mitigated the rust build up.

Leave the top gear alone...that shaft has small needle bearing at both ends and bout impossible to put back together without needle bearing falling out...

Oh, and another reason you dont want pound it out shaft is the case is aluminum and could crack...needs to be pressed out with a block of wood inside to not flex case if you had to but those needle bearings dont seem to wear out to my knowledge...I wouldnt mess with it

Good. I left it alone. Trying to scrub the majority of rust off. Continually ran HD paper towels in and around the bottom half to get all the old oil/water out. Sprayed all gears with WD40 as I scrubbed them. Will fill 6 oz marine gear oil tomorrow.
Finally removed the (never used) cable as I've been sitting on 100' of the synthetic line for 2.5 years.
Thanks all for the advice.
Really should take it completely apart but need the truck in 2 days.

I think that's kind of how the quote goes.
