I've been remiss the past couple of weeks... I don't recall what I've reported and what I haven't... So, here goes...

Been busy:
  • camping, in our Casita, with Dianna and Chester.
  • Hiking with Dianna and Chester
  • Hiking... Just me and my buddy, Chester
  • bought a new R-Pod trailer in Parumph, NV
  • sold the Casita to a couple from Sedona, AZ
  • 44 maintenance:
    • Had valves adjusted
    • Adjusted the timing
    • New plugs
    • Changed the oil and filter
    • Topped off the diffs, tranny and tcase
    • Lubed zerks and knuckles
    • Topped off other fluids
I'm trying to get out for a few days with Chester, before we leave for Angel Fire, NM... but, it's too hot to make a long 44 drive right now... If it cools down enough for us to get to Austin, NV, without baking, it's much cooler up around the Arc Dome Wilderness... Great hiking and camping up there.... We'll see...

Out with the old... In with the new...

Chester and I hiked up Lone Mountain, in the Vegas city limits... Some pics

Arc Dome is a great place to camp and hike, we camped there on the first night of a three-day trip many years ago when our '84 FJ60 was brand new. I woke up early and hiked for a while before sunrise with our 3-year-old son - letting my wife and 9-month-old son sleep in. The next day we headed east over the next couple of mountain ranges, with a stop at Lunar Crater. It's pretty impressive and worth a visit if you haven't seen it before. We didn't make our destination of Troy Peak because we got stuck mired in the mudflats in Railroad Valley, so we camped in the middle of the valley until we could dig out the next morning.

BTW, it looks like they're going to town with the 215 Beltway between Cheyenne and Hualapai. I didn't think they'd ever fill the big hole at the old gravel quarry.

Love it up there!!

My first trip, in 44, was to Arc Dome, Big Smokey Valley, Monitor Valley and Reese River Valley, with my dear old friend , Sgt Gunner.

We slept, the first night, in 44, on the east side of Arc Dome, above the Big Smokey Valley, near the Ophir Canyon trai,l and hiked a bit of it the next morning, before driving on up to Austin, to gas up and had a great burger, before working our way around to the Reese River Valley and into the western side of Arc Dome. Here we are that first evening.

We tent camped, under the trees along San Juan Creek, for 2 weeks and hiked Arc Dome, from the west... Never saw another soul, until the weekends... Then a few hunters would stop by, on their way to scouting for the upcoming season. They all wanted a closer look at 44.

I'm trying to get back up there, but may have to take my air conditioned Tundra...

On another note... Looks like they are paving the bottom of that big hole at 215 and Lone Mountain... 215 will apparently run under a Lone Mountain overpass.

Thanks Tom!

I removed both heaters... I needed the space, didn't need the heaters and certainly didn't need the added heat.

Thanks for the trip back in time as well as the portal to the other side...

I had forgotten about those "early" adventures with Sgt. Gunner and 44 way back when in the thread... Hope you find fair winds and following seas on the adventures to come. i realize nautical references may be odd in reference to Nevada but it was under water once right?
Safe travels,
Will

Thanks Will!!

Yep, it was once a great ocean... but, I'm really not that old... ;)

Out with Chester... we're having a great time. Camped at 7200', along a pleasantly noisy little creek, under a stand of Aspen.

We've been hiking the area all week and haven't seen a single person, until we drove down to check in with Dianna.

The cell signal is too weak to upload pictures. I'll post pictures when we return to the hell that is currently Las Vegas.

We just visited with a cowboy and an Indian... working side-by-side, looking for strays. There's apparently still a chance for peace... at least in the center of Nevada.

That thought was unsolicited... it just came to me.. just before a large kamakazi raven dive bombed my drivers side mirror and blew shards of mirror in the window.

Luckily, I was wearing a Duluth Fire Hose Jacket and it saved my arm.

More importantly, according to Chester, I was also wearing my Duluth No-Stink Undies...

That raven would have had 7 years of bad luck, to look forward to, if the impact hadn't killed him.

Well, we gotta get back to camp... there's eatin' to do.
