Mufflers, resonators and post turbo exhaust design

In my 1HD-T 80series, I ran a 4" dump pipe between chassis and gearbox, reduced to 3" to pass the transfer, then into a long braided flex, then 3" pipe exiting just behind the right rear wheel as high as possible. All bends were 45degrees or less apart from the two dump pipe bends which were approx 70degrees.

It was noisey as hell, crackled like a school bus with a busted manifold, I couldnt stand it, it was embaressing to drive.

I fitted the longest 3" straight through muffler (similar to the Magnaflow) I could fit and it made a heap of difference. It still has a deep throaty note to the exhaust, but I got rid of a lot of the dirty noise and sounds good.

This is an old post, but i am wondering if volcano cruiser reach any conclusion, I am running 3" pipe with aeroturbine 3030XL and i can't support the noise, in fact i am considering to going back to the stock exhaust and muffler system, but before that, i would like to know if there is any other option to reduce the exhaust noise keeping the 3".
I already spent nights reading MUD but the quiet's criteria change too much from person to person, I don't want to drive the school bus but also i know that more performance it will be different than stock exhaust.
any comments, please?
thanks

I'm hating my Aeroturbine 3030XL - I find it to be too quiet. All of the turbo whistle is gone! Most of the diesel growl is gone too. I plan on getting the muffler flanged and a straight pipe section fabbed to put in it's place. I'll use the muffler for long highway trips, and remove it for daily driving. I like to hear my turbo!

Are you sure it's a XL with the resonator, mine is pretty damn quiet

Stock exhaust sucks haha

I like my Aeroturbine 3030XL, just needs more boost as it sounds better when in the powerband IMO. I like turbo whistle too, but I don't want it any louder than it currently is.

I just did a 3" 316 stainless steel system.

I put a 2.5" through my turbo diesel work car and wanted it quiet but free-flowing.

I went with a central resonator (straight through, perforated and glass wool packed) and a baffled muffler of good size near the end. It gave the result I was looking for. No drone, quiet enough that it can't be heard while driving, gave about 2psi more boost (stock was restrictive) and strangley has a burble at idle.

I have used 3" SS straight from the turbine, into a large flowmaster straight through muffler and out in front of the back wheel, burbles nicely when idling and is not too loud on the pedal, I'm really happy with it.

Is that an O2 sensor just after the flexpipe? What are you using for a display?

Nice, I have an old Innovate Motorsports LM1 unit from back when I used to mess with tuning petrol cars with HPTuners, haven't used it in years though.

There's quite a few hand held units out there, I did away with the digital dash guage as it's constant flickering started to drive me nuts, I run it straight into my laptop now using the Logworx 3 software

Now that both of you mentioned, i will double check if the aero turbine 3030XL have been installed correctly (in the right direction).

thank you all for your replies, i have to say that some of you have a very impressed exhaust job (cut and weld), mine is a shame, that exhaust guys don't do a nice weld.

I will be back and report any change

Custom turbo elbow, 3" aluminized all the way back, no muffler. Sounds great and I can have conversations inside the truck with the windows down no problem.

Wow, that's very quiet for having no muffler!
