Hey everyone! As I make slow and steady progress on the essential repairs for the HZJ-77, one nagging thought keeps bothering me. I have to figure out a MPH solution for the speedometer. The face of the speedo has a timing belt light in the lower left corner, and I have not seen a speedometer with MPH that has this light. Any ideas?

Simple explanation:
0 to 80 = slow
81 to 100 = still slow but better
101 to 120 = blistering speed
121+ = so much noise you'll never hear the cops behind you so it's not a big deal.

The Canadian BJ70 MPH speedo doesn't have the timing belt light?

Canadian BJ70 came with the 3B.... no timing belt.

Some info here. You'll likely have a tough time sourcing it. A custom overlay might be the easiest route.

Just put something like this between your gearbox and the speedo cable:

My car had this. I just removed it and its kmh now. I still have the part but shipping to the US would be expensive.

I've looked and looked....there was a guy doing overlays but that was a while ago. Thought about doing a run of them but then I remembered I had this....

They do exist but are rather hard to find. An overlay would probably be the cheaper option otherwise try Cruiser Parts as they might have a source.

Like I said, you will have to completely disassemble the speedo. Only way I saw to make it work was to remove the needle, tear it apart and move it over to whatever desired board and face you are using.

I had both torn apart on the bench to do the swap and decided nah.

Way more work than I felt was worth it, delicate work as well.

Good luck, looking forward to seeing what you work out.

Cheers

I knew there were MPH ones out there! Haven't seen one. Where did that come from? Very cool....

Taking mine to the speedo guys down the road....the needle is really stuck on the MPH/KPH unit. I mess with gauges more than I like but when they fight me....I lose. I know my limitations and that's why it's best to let the pros handle them.....we have a great gauge place about 1/2 a mile from the shop. The troopy's needles on the speedo and the temp gauge were both broken off....they need help.

Just out of sheer curiosity....What is that one from?

I may try to create an overlay - some vinyl graphics might work well. I'll have to see if I can find a speedo in a junkyard here that I can rip apart to measure for the radius.

Back when I was restoring old Nissan Patrols I worked with a few speedo-gauge resto shops. They certainly can work some magic.

I personally find, 2nd and 3rd are your 25-35 mph range. 4th is your 35-50mph range and 5th is 50-55mph+.

Seems easy enough. :)

Cheers

If you hadn't put all of that insulation in your Ute you could do what I do and drive by "noise". :)

I second this opinion. It looks like way more work involved for the DIY'er.

While I didn't attempt to modify the speedo itself, I took the gauge cluster apart on the FJ73 to replace the temp gauge. Just looking at the speedo portion of the gauge cluster made me not want to even attempt at modifying the speedo.

I can supply a few speedometers if those guys can do a mph conversion , I probably have a few around the shop here

Canadian BJ-70 have the duel numbering. Getting the speedo needle off is a very delicate proposition.

The dual numbering is easy to find. Lockwood international makes replacement guage faces with the dual numbering. But they dont have one with the light for the timing belt. That's the difficult part.
