What kind of fuel economy do you get out of a stock FJ80.

4.0 and 4.5 versions?

An ad for a '91 one in my area says 22 MPG.

I think their full of BS.

Another ad says they have a '91 with ABS and Airbags. This wasn't available in '91 was it?

Thanks!

Chris

Both claims are BS.

93-97 get around 13 MPG +/-

ya they don't know what the F they are talking about.

When it was stock I got about 11 to 13 in and around town and 15 to 16+ on the Freeway.

Don't know now......Don't want to:o
Air bags are 95-97

my 91 , with a modification to part time 4x4, when easily driven (city) is in the 19 range, but it is so hard to drive easily, so normal 10 range. Highway, I have had mid to upper 20's driven easily and 64mph. The mod to part-time 4x4 jumped a lot. my next mod is high flow cat/gutting maybe, maybe jump up the coil to higher output. better air filter

mid to upper 20's... you're talking kilometers per gallon, right?

Nope after i put on the kit from Australia to convert it to part time, the mpg went up on highway huge, but as i said that is nice driving and 64 mph only, i towed a homemade trailer (from a 86 chevy truck) and I got better mpg then my friend driving his dodge truck

I am very skeptical unless you have a diesel.

FWIW, I get 11-16 in my 96 LX.

please tell more about the mod....

Daily sriving back and forth to work and so on I average 11 to 12. Not great but it's a cruiser so I obviously gave up on fuel mileage.

The mod is only applies to 91 and 92 LC's. You have a different diferential. It changes it from a full time 4x4 to a part time 4x4 just like a Jeep that you have to get out and lock the hubs then push the 4x4 button. so you have al lot less turning while you are driving. Around town I still get the normal mileage, but I get off the line a lot quicker. It would be the same if you took out the front drive shaft and put on locking hubs so you could let the wheels spin free and not turn the front axle. http://www.man-a-fre.com/parts_accessories/8Oparttime4wd.htm
Here is the manufactor of the kit.

45.6 MPG. Whoops that's the TDI jetta. 14 to 15 tops on a stock FJ-80. Many long trips on the highway hoping and praying it would get better. Nope. On the plus side in the city you'll see 13-14 mpg.

On my '95 FZJ80 I only get ~11-12 MPG around town. Took it out for my first long highway trip last weekend and got 15 MPG. That's with OME, 305/70/16 MTR's, ARB, Winch, Dual Batts, Rear bumper/tire carrier, and a roof rack, but I didn't go much over 65 MPH, mostly 60-65 MPH. I think that makes more of a difference than anything. Just keep it slow...

yes me too

We got 17 once but with no lift yet and 285s and I only went about 62-65 mph.

I simply do not believe this.

I want to, but I don't. I do drive easy on the highway, and therefore I get better mileage than just about anyone around here claims to: 17-18mpg on the highway, and sometimes up to 20mpg. If you are indeed claiming that, on demand, you could drive 60-65mph in a stock 91 with the only major difference being a part-time 4wd kit and get better than 25mpg, I formally both dare and beseech you to factually back up that claim, as it would be a huge benefit to all of us.

The conventional wisdom around here has been that those kits do little or nothing to improve mileage. If you are honestly claiming otherwise, you really ought to start a thread with some hard data; we'd all love to see it.
