Im moving my FJ62 from LA to the Hudson Valley where I go to college. I was wondering what its like battling with rust out there, and how you all recommend I survive the winter. I assume this truck will hold up well but I keep hearing that its going to have a hard time in the winter. Any suggestions or ways?

I'm assuming your truck is probably in decent shape and it would be a shame to subject it to our conditions.

The nice 60/62s have had a sheltered life. Most road warriors I see are rusted to hell and missing large masses of metal both sheet and frame.

does it really happen that fast? one winter would ruin the truck?

not 1 winter, I thought you would be here for 4. You would be smart to use some of that undercarriage stuff that is like an oil and can be sprayed on.

I can't remember the name of it but it works really good at stopping rust.

There's a local company out here that just started using a product called Waxoyl. Looks pretty impressive and I'll probably have it done to my DD.

Here's a good write up on it from a vendor in another forum:

Waxoyl Treatment Group Rate - ExploringNH Forums

If the area you are in uses liquid salt on the road to pre treat it is the worst type. It finds its way into all the seams of the body when it returns to the liquid state after it snows.

I think that is idea behind liquid film. You spray that stuff everywhere and it seeps into the cracks and stops the rust.

If leaving FJ60 in El-ay is not an option, waxoyl (or other salt laden h20 phobic goo) is a very good idea, and try and hit a car wash after a snow dump and subsequent road salting. Reducing salt on chassis time is key and will help reduce rusting. The FZJ 80 I have right now was in Cali and costa rica for its first 14 years of life, but 4 years in Boston took its toll. Just ask Landtank :grinpimp:

And don't for get snow tires. Not all seasons...the real deal. Don't be cheap, they will save your life in NY. Plus, with them, you can tug people out of snow banks who think all season tires are fine

Driving in upstate NY even for 1 winter will coat your truck with salt. High pressure washing will help but the road spray will salt it again immediately. Once the rust starts it is difficult to keep it from spreading.
