I want to get a winch for my fj60 but I don't want to get a big bullbar. Has anyone ever mounted a winch while retaining the stock bumper? Any advice?

Most people who do that don't mount the winch ON the bumper, they mount it on the frame and cut a chunk out the bumper. The bumper is probably not strong enough

Oh I know the bumper isn't strong enough. So I wondered how people have done it. Somehow make a mount above the bumper that mounts to the frame rails? Or it sounds like you are suggesting behind the bumper mounted to the frame rails.

There isn't much room in front of the apron.

I think you are better served to get aftermarket bumper to mount a winch on....4+ for example makes a good one.

Just don't rear end anyone or bye bye winch!

Couldn't agree more!!!

David, LCWIZARD on this forum, runs 4+ and he makes awesome stuff and gives stellar service.

I just got my 4+ front bumper mounted today and I will be completing the overhaul of my HS9500i winch to go on it.

There is basically no real way to mount a winch on these trucks while stock without losing the functionality of the stock bumpers or hacking them to pieces or placing the winch in a place that is far less than ideal and way too low.

The only other thing might be a custom receiver hitch box made to mount just below and behind the stock front bumper. You could mount a winch there to the receiver hitch box, but it will hang down pretty low when You have it in there.

Thanks for the insight. I guess I'm just surprised no one has done it before. I'd like to keep it looking stock but since I get out into the Vermont wilderness from time to time having a winch seems like a good idea. Guess I'll have to think about it more or just replace it with a bull bar

Do a search for a thread named Project X2 in the hardcore section. There are many "best mods" including a winch behind a stock looking front bumper. There's some amazing fab work here!

I'm sure people have done it before...but its not a safe thing to do. A winch is a good thing....I have one, you have to think about about the surface on which the winch is mounted and what type of loads / stress that surface will need to handle. Stock bumper is not up to that task in my view.

You can surf around this board and you will see some people who extended the bumper out and have done all kind of things....if you want a winch the best way to do that is get a bumper rated/made for the winch, its the best way to play it safe.

I think you could do something like this and cut the stock bumper to go around it.

totally, or just bolt a winch plate on top of the frame rails.

easy and done all the time.

X2^^ I like this set up, and you could probably figure out a way to remount the factory bumper.

I also have a 4+ bumper up front and couldn't be happier with it. Not too heavy, easy fit ( 8 bolts! ) and done.
With this route there is no messing around, take you a couple of hours and you're on your way.

have you seen this thread? I’ve been looking for the same and this is the closest and best look.

I did something similar. Used a universal winch plate and cut my factor bumper. I will weld the bumper into one piece using flat stock. My plate is attached on the lower frame and the sides. Had to weld in flat stock to tie into the frame using the same bumper attach holes.
