New owner of an FZJ80.

1997 Collectors Edition. 212,000 miles.

Pros: Zero rust, overall solid body and drivetrain. Good glass. New suspension. Decent 305 BFG ATs (worthless spare on factory aluminum wheel). No leaks that I can find right now, and it has rained pretty hard on it. Most all features still work on it, but not all.

Needs (or needed, as I have already done some): Head gasket, front axle seals, oil pump cover gasket (done), oil pan reseal, PHH, better tires, power seat work and leather, steering wheel, center console, and shifter leather covers redone, CD player INOP, D light INOP, no lockers, caster correction (done, Landtank), driver window motor (removed and cleaned, but still slow when wet), hood struts (done), radio antenna (done), fluids changed, and some other maintenance items.

Paid $9000.00.

Budgeted about $7000.00 for what I want to do, minus paint. When I was looking, I posted a wanted ad and got multiple contacts for 80s with better paint, lockers, better interior, but still needed maybe tires, for sure head gaskets, and surely other normal maintenance, and asking prices were averaging $15-16K. So after I put in my $16,000 I'll be ahead minus some features I would want like lockers.

A related data point:

My daughter just hit a deer. Insurance did not total vehicle after a $3500 estimate. Adjuster predicts supplements could reach $7,000 before he would total. With WV law allowing total losses at 75%, I expect he's looking at a market report showing a value of $9333 or more. 303K miles. 3x locked.

Not saying he's right, and I warned him I was prepared to fight a total loss until the day he retires. But it shows that even insurance companies are recognizing the increasing market value of the 80 series.

I think, by his wording, he means they were better cosmetically but for sure needed HG’s and other major items.

I actually feel the opposite. Pretty low cost of ownership actually and very low upkeep but maybe i've gotten lucky.

Bought mine a few years ago when they were still cheap and even though they're great don't know if I would spend the comparable money they're going for now.

Yeah I don't understand why everyone says they're so expensive to maintain relative to other trucks of the same era. Sure, they might be the 90s idea of a "luxury" vehicle, but at its roots an 80 series is just a simple 4x4 truck designed for rudimentary maintenance and harsh conditions. I know they're getting more collectible but I still see mine as a sub-10k beater.

Sure, it might not be as cheap as a Camry or Buick of the same era, but nothing like a used Mercedes or Land Rover. I'd think keeping fresh fluids in it and fixing what breaks would go a long way.

Anyway we'll see how I get on with mine.

Let me put it this way: they all had ~200-210k miles on them and none of them had documented head gasket changes. So I could get a $16k rig that was admittedly nicer, but still be looking at the same expensive maintenance requirements as the $9k rig I bought. The key is that is there was no documented maintenance on any of them. And in my personal opinion based on my own research here, there seems to be a good chance that the 200k mile mark is near the end of life for head gaskets on the 1FZ. There are plenty of cases stating otherwise, but enough of a trend in my mind to say that at this point in the lives of the rigs I was looking at, if I want peace of mind on long trips with my family in the car, I want a new head gasket installed. That is just how I personally approached the purchase.

Hm yeah mine has 226k AFAIK on the original HG. My compression is good and I keep an eye on temps so I hope that can prevent it but I hear they sometimes pop without much warning at all..

There are a lot of good threads to help develop an opinion. For clarity, from what I gather, they rarely catastrophicly let go. It's some kind of small sign that you could limp home on if local.

Another point is to apparently be careful doing a compression check or fluid flush bc these things can actually cause a failure also.

that is what I am finding locally, lots of 80 series creeping over 200k into 300k, and very few with any documented headgasket replacement

How could a compression test cause a failure?

I had the shop do mine and it seems good after 500 miles, so hopefully I’m good there..

Also, I was about to do a coolant flush: anything to watch out for to avoid doing more damage?

Just search "high mileage" and rest assure we are OK. I flushed the coolant once a yr and have the compression/leak test annually and I have OG HG with 251k on the clock
Do I worry-always. That's why I invested on a scan gauge to monitor my coolant temp. I also make sure my cooling is up to date with preventative maintance. Always check for coolant discoloration, make sure your 80 is dry and not leaking. Just save aside $$$$$ for thst day to happen otherwise enjoy your 80. If you are worry and can't afford paying a shop for owning an 80 then get a civic.

My temps are good but I have an intermittent rough idle, especially on start up, which worries me at times.

Opinions seem to be split on the HG issue, even among mechanics who've spent decades working on these things.

I talked to one well-regarded Cruiser mechanic in my area who told me "every one I open up at 220-250k miles is highly deteriorated near Cyl. 6." Then I talked to another very respected LC specialist who told me the "HG issue is overblown on the forums; i have 350k on the original top end on mine."

Then even with all the threads discussing it here, you get the same conflicting takes, which can make it hard for a newb to assess the situation.

At least a top end rebuild isn't the end of the world at 3500.

Folks started asking, so I just tried to state what MY point of view is based on my research here and elsewhere and then how I came to my personal decision. I don't want to worry about it and I have budgeted for it and so I will get it done and move on.

Regarding compression checks and fluid flushes, again, this is just what people have said happened to them. I am by NO means an expert on this. But I did enough research to make a decision for my situation that I will be happy to take care of.

Yea I don't think it's a bad idea to just do it so you don't have to worry; I'd probably just have it done as well if I had plenty of money.

Could you point me towards where you read about compression tests and flushed contributing to HG failure, just out of curiosity?
