Thanks to those who offered suggestions to my ignition problems. I have yet another question. My new 40 is a late model 1977 with a whole different distributor/points set-up than my older 76 had. I have the Haynes manual for both 77 and prior and 77 and newer. Neither shows or talks about the set-up I have as far as I could find-they both show the typical points set-up. Anyway here is a pic of it please let me know if you are familiar with this and how/if it should be gapped or set-up. Obviously the rotor is off to show the set-up. I am still having issues with no spark from the coil and think it may be a points issue from advice I got.
Thanks!

I have installed points the past where they tend to short out to the casing, make sure this does not occur. I have used a light bulb to make it's not shorting out. As the engine turns it will turn, the bulb will oscilate on and off.

i dont know your total issue but you mentioned that you had no spark at the coil. make sure you have a solid ground. i had this nightmare for awhile until it was solved w/ a different better ground point.

If you don't have a bulb, a multi-meter also works...switch it to measure continuity.

The same goes for checking electronic ignition (pickups/modules).

That is the fully electronic ignition with a magnetic pickup, so it doesn't have points.

Generally, you find out whether the pickup coil in the distributor or ignitor are bad by swapping in known good parts (unless you are an electronic geek with an O-scope and signal generator, in which case you wouldn't be asking about this).

IVAN;

Here's some stuff that might help. What u have is what Pin_head said; Prolly a 1978 reluctance distributor. It requires an ignitor module with coil to function. This distributor will also drive a Jacob's system as well.

I believe all you are looking for is in this thread...

You will find that grant5127 provided the measurement of .008" for the distance between the signal rotor and pickup coil projection.

BTW - make sure your vac advance is working... looks a little corroded. Also, I'd double check and make sure I had airflow thru there. hth

Thanks all of you for the responses. I finally got spark and cruiser_gt you just read my mind with what I needed for the correct measurement. I will check the vacuum advance as well! Whoo Hoo one step closer to getting this turd fired up!!
