Monstaliner inside of roof cap

I want to use monstaliner to coat the inside of the roof. I will be using jeep spice to do the roof and rear tub, this color was the closest they had to olive 653.

I sanded and used an abrasive wheel to get all the carpet glue and foam off the inside of the cap.

In a number of places, I got down past the fiberglass and can see styrofoam of some sort.

Should I patch this with something, not sure what? Or will the Monstaliner be enough to fill and protect those areas?

I'd be tempted to just patch it in with epoxy putty - if anything. I doubt it affects anything structurally, so just the liner should "protect" it. If it was bigger I'd say 'glass it back in.

I'd use a small fiberglass kit. 10 bucks at walmart or any autoparts store.

I would do it more for the strength. It sets up very fast, but I would let it cure well before coating. The fiberglass is easy to sand, and then you can scratch it up with some 36 grit before applying the monstaliner.

Thanks I appreciate it, Autozone's kit is $20. Going to have to look elsewhere for a small fiberglass repair kit. 36 grit it is, should I scratch the rest of the cap with 36 grit or is the 100 grit and abrasive wheel enough?

It looks like it is 15-20 bucks afterall. Walmarts site says "price varies"

Monstaliner instruction only calls for 120 grit.

Having problems painting the outside of my top. I put a thread on the 40 section. I prepped and the paint is not sticking. I prepped using 100 grit and cleaned with MEK. Using duplicolor Wimbledon white.

Spray can? What are you priming with? With 100 grit, i would think that you need a primer for both adhesion and block sanding to remove scratches. 400 grit should be your last sand before paint.
Make sure you are keeping a wet edge. Use bright light.



Just a warning to you, if you are in a hot and humid climate, my monstaliner began setting up very quickly. Including inside the sealed can work quickly, and if you are spraying, buy two shutz guns.

Yes, using a rattle can and no I wasn't using a primer. I will be using a primer now!! Suggestions on a primer?
Should I sand between primer and paint?

When you say last sand, how many times am I sanding and with how many different grits?

After sanding twice, once with 220 and once with 500 the primer stuck to the cap!!! Will shoot it again with primer and maybe a 1st coat depends on the amount of wind we are having.

Monstaliner comes in the mail today! Will hopefully do the rear tub and inside of roof cap Saturday.

Typically no. The primer and paint will have instructions on what timeframe to put the topcoat on. Like after four hours but not more than 24 hours or something. If you wait longer than recommended to topcoat, then they will suggest sanding.

I did not end up having enough monstaliner to do the inside of the roof. I decided to do the inside of the roof with white liner instead of jeep spice. I think it will be brighter and look better.

carlos fj80, do you mind me asking how much liner you got to do the inside of the hardtop? I'm hoping to do the same in a few weeks and would like to get an idea on how much to order.

just the inside of the roof cam can be done with 1 quart rolled, but you might get 2 just in case issues present themselves. I had some major issues with my product and I now am going to have to go back to get entire coverage on the under side of my tub.

I would definitely get 2 quarts if you are spraying and want to have 2 coats worth. I rather have extra product than not enough.

Snoozer, what issues did you have?

Temperature was near 100 and humidity 80%+. That and after talking with Eric, I should have used a little more MEK throughout the process to prevent clumping. I assume it was a combination of the weather and this discrepency that cause me to run a little short. This is why I did the underside first, to test for any issues

Its just always better to get extra product to account for human error!
