Mods for mileage on GX?

ive seen some exhaust systems and I've already installed a KN filter, which sent the avg mileage up about .5 so far, do full exhaust systems help much with mileage for these trucks?
Is there anything else you've done that has helped add a couple MPG?
Mean while I wonder how tough it is to put a parade extended range fuel tank on em...

Prado range tanks will work (the petrol one). It does replace the spare area completely.

I am highly considering it myself.

There isn't much else to increase mpg.

I have the filter and upgraded ignition coils with iridium plugs and got a little bit out of it but not much. A good free flowing exhaust would probably help but I don't want the noise.

It's a rolling brick so be thankful we don't get the gas mileage of the 100 series. In addition to what others have said, even though im not a k&n fan, I'd make sure all your fluids have been changed out recently and use synthetic oil. Light foot is the best solution but there's no fun in that

Agree about the k&n. They let in too much dirt (documented) to be worth any slight mileage / performance gains. I will say, if you want extra mileage, don't change your tire size. I went to 285s, and it caused a noticeable drop in mileage......but that doesn't bother me. Fuel mileage is never a consideration for any modifications I make, because I enjoy the vehicle so much more when I get it the way I like it.

I've been averaging 14.2 over the last 10,000 miles or so, calculated using gas station receipts and the odometer. The built in mpg gauge on mine is consistently optimistic by 2 mpg. Replacing the diff fluids, the transfer case fluid, the air filter, spark plugs, cleaning the intake and MAF sensor, setting the tires at 35 psi, all seemed to make very little difference. Topping up the ATF actually improved mpg but only for a month or so. I later replaced the ATF filter and put in new fluid and saw the same mpg increase again, still only for a month or so. Turning off the A/C gives me +2 mpg but then it is hot and people complain.

I bet if you lowered it and removed the rear view mirrors and factory roof rack it would cut down on the drag. I wonder if you could remove 4 of the spark plugs and make it a 4 cylinder?

I am not worried at all more like fishing for excuses to install exhaust lol and I wanted to see if anyone ever installed one and noticed an improvement. I don't need better mileage, but everyone's gotta want better mileage, if nothing more for the range...

How do you guys drive? How much is around town, how much on the highway?

I have a automatic Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with 66k mile on the clock and a 2.5" lift and 285/70/17, bumpers, winch and more, since new has avg 17.3 mpg. This is a brick and driving into a 20 mph head wind at 75mph pulling a 1200lbs off trailer, I was getting 14mpg.

I would expect a 470 to get close to the 18 mpg going down the road and the 14-15 around town.

I get 13-17 depending on my driving habits, but I have done a lot of PM lately.

I am right at 16.6 mpg since April 2014. I track every fillup and correct for my tire size.

Whether I use regular, mid, or premium, the mpg doesn't vary.

When I went from stock size tires to the 255 size (taller, but skinnier), my mileage did not change.

Running AC, I lose 0.5mpg.

The only variation I observe is long highway trips, where I typically average 17.5 (75 mph or higher) to 18 mpg (around 65-70mph).

I believe my original window sticker quotes 14 city / 18 highway, so my overall mpg is right where it should be. Expecting 20mpg or more from a 4800lb brick with full-time 4WD is a pipe dream. I've seen some people on other forums say they get +20mpg, I call BS unless they simply roll downhill everywhere in neutral.

If you wife is savvy and/or suspicious, I'd suggest an alternative rationalization for upgrades.

None have tried a plug-in performance programer? ...

I think exhaust, intakes, and fluids are always gonna help in just about any car maybe not a huge difference but cutting down on the restricted air in and out of any motor means it doesn't have to work as hard which equals in efficiency. .. kinda like breathing through a straw or toilet paper roll ... but non of this matters if your not easy on the gas pedal ... IMO

Did you know if you could melt the a GX you can actually make two 1/2 ton pick up truck out of it ))
