Hey All.

I'm in the process of wiring up a modern stereo. My wiring was in good shape, so I just have a couple of questions.
  1. Where do I tap in for the parking brake signal? Or, how do I bypass?
  2. Where do I tap in for reverse (H55F) so the camera comes on?
  3. The factory harness has a ground connection, but would like to have a secondary ground. Anyone have a favorite place?
Thanks in advance!

-I used this to bypass the parking brake signal for my pioneer: It’s nice to make adjustments without having to pull the parking brake.

-My reverse camera had a wire coming off the camera that I was able to run to the reverse light positive wire behind the rear taillight and I soldered the connection that triggers the camera and has work great.

Thanks for sharing. I'll check out that link. I'll open up the camera to see about its wiring.

My head unit has a 4 ft wire coming off it that says it goes to reverse. Anyone know where the reverse signal comes out of the H55F? There has to be some kind of connection coming off the trans. Right?

Open up your reverse camera box and take a look at the head unit side of the harness. Most have the yellow video aux, along with a red wire for that connection. It is essentially a 12v trigger to tell the head unit to switch over to the video feed. So connect that red wire to the wire on your head unit.

On the other end (camera side) there will be the other end of that same red wire, along with (likely) another red wire that says something like “connect to reverse”. Splice those two red wires into the reverse bulb circuit (and ground the black wire, and you’re good to go. When you shift into reverse you’ll then have 12v powering the camera as well as telling the head unit to switch to the video input.

Also, I’d start from the head unit with the harness and run it to the rear. Much easier to hide all the extra wire in the rear than behind the dash.

And for the parking brake wire, it usually depends on the manufacturer of the head unit. Some simply need to be grounded, and some need a separate harness to fool them. Give it a google search and find out which for yours.

Just like the 4spd the reverse switch on the H55F is on the top towards the front of transmission. (I only know this because I am in the middle of a transfer case rebuild and have watched @orangefj45 video several times and he installs the reverse switch towards the end). You probably could access if you remove shift boot , maybe from underneath not sure how much space between H55F and trans hump.
Also like @Dubs2017 said depending on what camera you have the red wire I mention also ran along with the yellow video aux plug that goes to stereo and had to be connect at stereo also.

Thanks guys. I’ll do a deeper dive tonight!

Any chance you could share a link to that video?

I think it would be easier to grab the reverse signal from inside the vehicle rather than underneath at the switch. I can't remember the routing on a 60 so I may be wrong here.

I think there is a bundle of wire coming down from the dash, under the floor mat near the door sill, and then into the body panels on the driver side.

If I am wrong it is along the frame and enters the body inside the rear quarter panel right by the tail light.

It will be red with a blue stripe.

I just looked at an '84 and the routing is as I thought. You should be able to find the R/L wire in the LH/drivers side kick panel.
Very helpful. I'll report back!

Didn't get a chance to tap into it yet, but I'm pretty sure I found the red with blue striped wire. It's blurry, but pretty sure the FSM confirmed that. I'll be giving it a go here shortly.

If this doesn't work, I'll likely just tap in right at the bulb to make sure I get the right connection.

I finally got around to this today. For some reason, the wiring wasn't working with the wiring up front, but when I tied it directly to the bulb wiring at the tail light housing (to the same wire), everything was Kosher. Go figure! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
