Mobil 1 Synthetic and MPG

Do you track you mpg and if so would you be willing to share that info?

You stated you like Amsoil so why not use it in the engine as-well?

I don't track MPG. I try to fuel with Top-tier fuel and get premium when the temps are below freezing (the only time I can see a performance difference at my altitude). The only thing that really seems to effect mileage is accelerator position. If I can I like to cruise at 2200 rpm for max mileage but more often then not I get my cost efficiency by trying to stay below a ticketable speed. When I was towing a 3500 lb trailer it had very little effect on mileage so anything else is not worth my effort.

I lube with a goal of longevity but tamper that with the knowledge that very few cruisers will be put out of service by lube failures.

Amsoil is too pricey for engine oil that I will replace spring and fall regardless of mileage and M1 at Walmart is a killer value. I run Toyota oil filters since they are real cheap at cruiserdan prices and have great features (o-ring, dust cap).

I feel good with Amsoil in the diffs, Tcase and transmission since they go so long without a change. I do notice the difference on below zero starts.

If someone chose to run DexVI in the trans they might be doing better than I am. It'd be a great experiment for the board.

I asked, to see who else may have noticed the same as I.

I started considering the ATF after reading (in Ih8mud. com) a specific statement; "Mobil 1 syn AFT reduced my mpg".

I'm interested in have my LC100 run at the peak performance all it's life, hopefully 500,000 or more. Proper maintenance and using the best lubes & filters are key to this.

Be assured Liam, the drop in my mpg was noticeable the day I changed to Mobil 1 synthetics. So it is unlikely (not impossible) that age suddenly cause the mpg to drop.

I see people here like Jim_Chow getting great mpg and he's using M1 Delvac oil, what AFT he's using I don't know but I do know he has been a wealth of information to me and many here and he obviously pays attention to his maintenance and how it effect his mpg.

Hopefully Jim and many others will give us some feedback on this issue.

I'm still using M1 Delvac 5w40 in the 100. ATF is Toyota T-IV, diff/t-case fluids are M1 delvac 75w90 (in the 5 gal pail...had two Toyota 4x4s at one time:) ). In my honda prelude, I've tried M1 delvac 5w40 and M1 0w40. Both gave me equivalent fuel economy in the honda, but M1 10w30 (Walmart 5qt) did drop the fuel economy roughly 10%, IIRC (tranny ran the same Redline MT-90 the entire time). In my 4runner, I ran M1 delvac 5w40 and Shell Rotella T-synthetic 5w40 and got equivalent fuel economy numbers, better than M1 10w30 or dino (valvoline). BTW, diffs ran M1 delvac 75w90 and tranny/t-case ran Redline MT-90. In my Honda CRV, I ran dino 5w30, M1 0w40, and chevron delo 15w50, honda ATF. The M1 0w40 gave the best economy, nearly 10% better than dino 5w30 and chevron delo dino. While I suspect the results are linked to viscosity, all I can definitely say is that on my 4 cars driven over 6 yrs, I got the best fuel economy numbers w/ M1 delvac 5w40 and M1 0w40. I'm down to the last 2 gal of D1, so next time, I might change to M1 0w40 in the 100 for cost savings ($32/gal for the M1 Delvac 5w40 vs. $26.64/gal for M1 0w40), which also means I would be running M1 0w40 in all 3 of my cars.

Hi NMuzj100,

Myself, I went with M1 for two reason other than the normal PR:

1) I read Castrol had changed from a 4 to crack 3 hydrocarbon, something I have no doubt you know much more about then I, with your time in BiTOG.

2) M1 syn oil, ATF, gear lube and grease was readily available.

I wanted it easy to remember what i use in which application & vehicle, easy to obtain and store all lubes for topping off, M1 fit the bill.

I am considering changing my ATF to Dexron VI equivalent and will report back here with what ever I do. I did call Mobil and they gave me the name of a local dealer here in the Denver area that carries it (no retail store has it yet) But I must say I'm not crazy about switching from a full synthetic to a blended ATF.

Or i could go with: Amsoil Synthetic Fuel Efficient Automatic Transmission Fluid Product Code: ATLQT-EA this was developed in response and too conform to GM Dexron VI specs, for about $2 more than M1 and $3 more than Castrol VI.

Quite honestly, I'm hopeful many here will come forward that have tried one of the top shelve brands with some tracking of the results and found a good balance between transmission protection , smooth and efficient operation with good fuel economy. I'm not smart enough to decipher which oil company has the best all-around lubrication solution. My limited understanding is that a good synthetic is a balancing act offering the thinest film between components to minimize resistance, with the proper pressure, offer the greatest protection in the specific use without breaking down or foaming with the minimum of additives.

Let me ask:
Are you happy with Amsoil in your trany?
Which Amsoil ATF?
Is it a smooth shift?

PS, I to have found great deals at Walmart but recently noticed there containers have changed to 4.5 qt where as other local auto parts stores are carrying 5.5 containers for only $2.00 more. Additional this week Pepboy has 5 qt of M1 syn or M1 syn EP plus a M1 oil filter for $29.99 normally about $50.00 plus.

Good to hear from you Jim,

You came in the {Who Has the Best MPG Contest} i post a couple of years ago as top overall average MPG, although i had you beat by a small margin prior to my changing to all M1.

I have thought about the Delvac and the 0W-40 and wonder if you would get the same great MPG average in a cooler climate, what's your thoughts on that?

The T-IV your using is interesting as I believe thats is what was my old ATF fluid.

5-30W, pure highway. 20.5 gallons produces this result:

LX470 mpg.webp

If I were gonna worry about a vehicles MPG, I'd drive a prius.
