Ditto what @Atwalz said. My kids get out of school the first week of June. I'd love to do Glacier NP, BANFF, Glacier Bay, and Denali one year. For me that's like 4-5 days of driving just to get to Denali though.

I’m not free til about June 22nd...but free from then until mid August.

**Mosquito thing**
Alaskan mosquitos are typically at their WORST in June.
As things dry a bit, it improves. In three trips, we never had bad mosquitos in early August...

Worth avoiding IMO, as nasty mosquito season really can turn camping into madness.

Food for thought:
You know how down here in the 48, dusk is the worst time for bugs? Just remember that “dusk” lasts many hours in Alaska. So just think of your worst mosquito memory at dusk...and then multiply that by hours. :) This is why I’d push the date back if possible.

Start an Alaska thread and get off my Moab thread hosers!

would be nice to get together sunday night, discuss trail options, communication...etc.

Anyone up for a Moab group dinner on Sunday evening before we split up for HITR?

Yes on dinner. Some will be wheeling on Sunday too, so would be good to know when/where soon.

met a nice vendor at the overland expo, trailsoffroad.com

They are a free site for now, said they will become a paid subscription service next year.

they offer gpx files of most trails. I started downloading some of the moab trails last night.

the more people with active tracking/mapping, the less chance of "missing" the trail...:hillbilly:

Trails and dinner sound great! Let's definitely get together and plan out what trails we want to run. Top of the world is on my list and I've always wanted to do Hells Revenge. We'll be in Moab Saturday afternoon. Anyone else arriving on Saturday?

should be arriving 5~6 depending on potti breaks for the kids.

Ok....I'm going to pass on Moab this year....I've had all the 100 degree days I can stand.

..will spend some extra time in Durango and Ouray perhaps and finally take that steam train from Durango to Silverton... See you all on Wed....

But it's a DRY heat....

Make sure you keep an eye on your water (and if you can, trans) temps and bring sunscreen.
Utah has been abnormally hot the past couple of weeks.
If it's dipped into the 100s here up north, Moab is going to be scorching.
Actually the new is on right now, they're saying close to 110* in southern Utah. Yummy.

That’s Really up there.
Gonna look at forecasts...

Looks like 100-102 on the days we’re there. But if your forecasts are anything like ours...it always seems to be hotter than they predict.

Last summer it was right around 100 for Hell’s, I believe...but not sure, bc my outside thermometer was acting up.

We will be rolling into town around 3:00 pm Sunday and will be up for dinner.

I have a Garmin GPS that I plug a Funtreks SD card into with all the trail way points. It worked great the last time I was there.

Smart man. I'm not looking forward going to the heat coming from the heat. However, we are locked into our hotel room in Moab and my kids have never been, so it is what it is. I will miss having more time in the San Juans.

We should be getting into Moab around 2/3p and will definitely be up for some beers and food! See you guys soon and safe travels all.
