We have done some of this before

The NorCal 80's group did a "Pre-Cruise Moab run" through the Needles district of Canyonlands NP in 2006, and then just a week ago, we did the Maze district of Canyonlands NP as another Pre-CM trip.

If you guys want any info or my thoughts on these places, hit me up, glad to help.

One thing: The Maze area is an extremely remote area and will need a dedicated 2-3 days alone there to explore, plus lots of fuel. The camping is very restricted and very few campsites are there, by permit only. The good thing: very few visitors, so you've pretty much got the place to yourself. And it's awesome! I can't wait to go back and explore more of this part of Utah.

and during this trip, I got a call from Andy!!! Evidently, somewhere in the maze, one can get cell phone reception

Yeah, we had Verizon access (not ATT) at several points along the way. David was able to upload some photos to this site, they're under Expeditions, "Live from the Maze" thread.

The ham radios worked fabulously. We were at one side of the Maze district one day and heard the Rising Sun members out scouting trails, so we talked to them. I think they were on Porcupine Rim trail 40 miles away, and I was able to talk to them on my HT using a quarter-watt.

This area is considered the MOST remote desert in the US, because it takes such a long ride on dirt roads to access it. They keep it that way on purpose.

Sure would be nice to take the FJ40 on this trip instead of the UZJ100.
We'll see how things develop.
Wish me luck.

Going to be spending this weekend making sure everything is ready to go for the trip. Should be fun. Busy, Busy.

Ditto on the trip prep.

Lows in the mid 40's even with this cold snap, guess the down bag will stay at home.

I'm in big time prep mode:eek:. Lots of work.

I have to put the food and clothes into the camper and load the 80 on the trailer, everything else is ready to go.

Having a great time. Taking lots of pictures, unfortunately the upload speed is so slow it would take a long time to get any posted. Will do a bunch when we get back.

Wish you guys were here.

That's it! Where are all the pics? C'mon guys. Give the homeboys (As in boys that stayed home) something to be jealous of.

This should have been the first thing you guys did upon returning home.
