Good morning (or not depending on where you are). I’ve had a bit of a weird issue and was hoping that some one in this world might have seen something like what is happening with me. Details:

  • I have a 2016 LC
  • I replaced the battery with a Toyota battery last year at 68K
  • a month ago I decided to add a cell booster to my rear power group - at the time all I had back there was the continuously on power for the fridge - without the fridge plugged in I never had an issue
  • two days later the car won’t start, I jump the car, assume that my add of the cell booster was faulted, and pull the fuse for the entire power distribution line to the back of the car
  • three weeks later (yesterday) the car won’t start again, I dig around with a multimeter and all grounds look good, power off draw is really low, all seems good - battery tester says battery looks off. Go to Toyota and they put it on the Toyota tester (necessary for battery replacement) and it says the battery just needs 2 hours of charging - they charge it and send me on my way.

So far nothing weird right? Just a dead battery and an overly optimistic battery tester. But then when driving home from the deep recharge I go to back into my driveway and the screen has a small caution icon in the bottom and the directional lines that are yellow and move with the steering wheel are gone. What did I miss? Is there a learning phase for the car when the battery is disconnected for the computer to figure out where the wheels are? Is that somehow different from the wheel position sensor in the instrument cluster? Is there a trick I can use to get those back? Did I fry a delicate backup computer with all my jump starting?

Yes and yes.

Give it some time.. and it stands to reason the more often the steering is swept from one lock to the other the quicker it will build the conditions it needs to learn.

I had the same issue after I had disconnected my battery for a bit of an extended time. When I reconnected and started it up I got a system initializing error. IIRC, There is a re-calibration procedure which is really just moving the wheel from one extreme to the other. After doing that it just took time for the initialization to complete. After driving around for a little while it suddenly just fixed itself.
