The title almost says it all. I found a 70 FJ40 on ebay in my area that's for sale. The guy wants $3000 for it, but I think I'll offer something more like $1500.

What is there that I should look for if I go to check it out?

Rust is always an issue. Beware. Truck should have an F motor and three speed tranny, and drum brakes at all four corners. Look for leaks everywhere mechanical on a truck this old. Panic stop check the brakes. Drum brakes are rarely well maintained and functioning perfectly well.

Bring a magnet to check for bondoed up bodywork and a compression tester isn't a bad idea either. Bring a camera and post some pics.

If you can't do your own work, you can easily and quickly throw 3k into an old rig just on brakes, steering components, front end rebuild, and leak fix. 3 more for new motor, 6 more for body work, 2 more in suspension, you get the idea.

You may want to consider looking for a '71 and newer so you can have a power brake booster.

You should ask him about those details he alluded to. Hey, it looks like potentially a good find there if you're prepared to put a bit of money and time into it. Keep us posted.

It has some nice things on it like the PTO winch, new brake parts, and tires. But it also looks like it has some serious rust. The guy is nuts if he thinks its worth 9k. If you can get it for $1500, I think its worth it though. However, that rust on the rocker panels probably isnt something minor and easy to fix. If youre looking for a cruiser that you can fix up to be something nice, I would pass. A winch, roof rack, and tires are easy to come by later. But replacing the tub or fixing that rot will be a huge effort. The top also looks like the gutter have some rust.

I am not sure what youre ceiling price is, but you may want to consider looking further if he doesn't take $1500. Also, its my experience that eBay isnt the place to find deals. If youre serious about finding a 40, I would also look through the local papers, auto trader, etc.

Good luck and keep us posted-

Looks like this one has a brake booster. If it's got rust in the rockers, look close at the rear sill.
All in all, not a bad looking rig...judging by the pics.

From the looks of under the hood, it might need some attention to the wiring.

looks pretty dead to me.
lots of rust, you can see the rust on the rear sill as well. the engine compartment looks like a hack job.
besides, I doubt you'll get it for 1500, if the guy wants 9k (completely unrealistic) and bidding starts at 3k.
I don't know if you follow the for sale ads here, but you can get very nice trucks for good prices here. if 1500 is your upper limit, you are in for a lot of work and expenses later on though.

It startin at $3000, but it'll go higher. I'd keep lookin.

"The speedo shows 37K miles, it has more than that, but I do not believe there are many more from the appearance of the underneath side."

Don't know where the "underneath side" is.

It is all "relative" in West Virginia. :whoops:

Good advice!! Thanks.

I guess I'll keep looking around for another one, and maybe check back if the price changes.

I'm not looking for a perfect cruiser, but I'd like something that will make it through a winter of occasional short trips in the snow and maybe a long drive or two. I don't want a completese rustbucket, but enough rust to give me an excuse to buy a welder and make the car cheap.

There's one in northeast PA that i need to check out if i can find the time to get there. That one, even if in a little bit worse cosmetic shape, seems to have had a little bit better care. It's listed on the ih8mud classifieds. . .

Thanks for the help!

If it's in your area, then go look at it. Can't hurt. And every time you look at one you learn a little bit more and get a better idea of the local market. I'm going to look at this one tomorrow. If the price is right I might even buy it.

Tom

Buy it now price 9K -- good luck getting it for 1.5K. Its worth 3K.

Thats a bigger basket case then the two I have pulled apart right now! Man I really feel like I got a good deal now! That thing has rust behind the quarters, you can bet on it, and couple that wuth the typical Skyjacker spring sag in the rear and its not even worth the 1500 above.
