Late model FJ40 buckets seats, do they have a metal plate on the back of the backrest?

I have one such seat in my possession that does _not_ have the plate, and doesn't seem to have ever had it. I've just seen a photo of a pair online that does have the plates, however. The "overhang" at the top of the back of the seat seems to be smaller on the ones with the plate than on the plateless seat that i have. Whats up?

Also note that all of these seem to be late model buckets - they recline, have plastic covers on the mechanisms, etc.

Drew,

I believe 79 and later had the metal plate on backside of the seats. Of course, our NZ market 42's had the 60/40 bench, no metal backing. Not sure about yours, but mine doesn't have the threaded holes in the tub floor for 2 standard buckets - it's drilled and spaced for the 60/40 bench only. Easy to remedy, but something to check out.

Well the NZ benches are another animal entirely. I'mtalking about normal grey FJ buckets.

Compare these, see the difference?:

Ones in the second photo with the steel back are the same as a pair i have, that i got out of an Aus army 84 soft top troopie.

The ones in the second photo look the ones in my 80 BJ40, metal backing, reclining, head rests...

Did this question ever get answered?

My '82 has original upholstery and no metal plates on the seat backs. The PO (original owner) assures me that they were never there. Today I was told by someone I'd consider an FJ40 authority that all 40 model years had metal plates on the bucket seat backs. Not an important question, but now I'm curious. Anyone know for sure?

The 1980 model year was the last time they used the metal seat backs on the FJ40. Starting in 1981, they were full vinyl.

Thanks. I also found an old post from Landpimp confirming what you said. No metal seat backs from '81 forward. So no one stole mine after all. ;)

that metal back sure would look good painted pewter, sitting in my cruiser.

my '73 buckets are OEM as far as I know, are "ribbed" if you will, and have pleather over the back.

Making the back vinyl was just another step away from a basic utility vehicle the 40 series started out as. Metal backs make more sense for loading stuff in the back then soft vinyl that can tear. The post 78 seats reclined but the hinge setup was much weaker than the 73-78 buckets

I've got a set of dented up '77 ones in my garage you can have chromed OMA, you know you want them ....

Tucker

No $hit. Because a 40 can never have too much chrome. Save 'em for me. :flipoff2:
