Have this posted I the 60 section, but thought I would post here as well. Looking for some advice and recommendations on an aftermarket water temp gauge for my 1986 HJ60. I've done a few searches on here about some aftermarket gauge installs, but most were in the 5 to 6 year old range, so was hoping to hear from some of you that recently purchased or installed one....or better yet, some of you that have had one installed for a while with good results and would recommend. Photos of how you hooked it up under the hood and where you installed the gauge inside would be very helpful.

I want to keep the stock temp gauge and not tap into any of the stock temperature sensors. Here is what I am thinking, looking for a mechanical gauge (am I right to assume no electrical wiring is needed with this), one that maybe hooks up into the upper radiator hose with one of those pipe connector fittings. Don't know if that is the right terminology, but I saw it done on a few searched posts. Also, don't want to cut up the interior dash, so was thinking of mounting the gauge down near the hood release lever. Anyways, that what I was thinking. Most of these ideas came from posts related to this, but if you have any alternative ways to approach it, please let me know. Thanks so much!

Hello Jen ..

My 60 series Dash at night ..

Not a mechanical water temp gauge, it's a Koso ( several threads about it here in the forum ) and I did put it in the lower rad hose ..

Thanks for the info. Is it better to put the sensor in the lower radiator hose instead of the upper?

Yes, you want to get your reading when the coolant is at its hottest, before it goes through the rad. I'm not super familiar with the 2H engine, but I assume the coolant routes out the block, through the rad, and into the head, making the lower rad hose a great place to take a reading.

Sorry mate, you have it back the front.
The hot coolant leaves the head at the top hose and enters by the bottom hose.
Therefore the correct place for the sensor is the top hose.

I'd go an Engine Watchdog before I went with a second coolant gauge.. if you lose all your coolant, or you're low on coolant you're going to get a false picture of the engine temperature.. the Engine Watchdog bolts onto your head and gives you a visible display AND an audible alarm at a preset temperature.. its awesome peice of mind, especially the Audible Alarm.
