i asked on the board a while ago if the rear wheel bearings need to be repacked liked the front and most ppl on the board said definitely. My mechanic says that its a full floater and the grease in the axle goes and lubricates them. Is this trueor what? i am confused thanks so much guys

Do you have rear disk brakes?

If yes, you have a full floater and need to have the bearings repacked.

If no, you have a semi-floating rear axle and the bearings are lubricated by the the gear lube in the axle.

BTW, it helps to put your vehicle info in the sig line so we always know.

Well from your mechanic's actual statement then he's wrong. If it's a full-floater then the gearlube from the rear diff does NOT get to the bearings.

Now if the full-floater part was wrong, so you really have a semi-floater then yes the gearlube from the rear diff lubes them.

If you have a full-floater then there are two wheel bearings in there, exactly like the front.

The easiest way to tell if you have a full floater is if the rear axle sticks out inside the rim. A full floater will have a round part (the hub) that sticks out and you could set the wheel on it while you are aligning lugnuts. The center part sticks out about 4-5". A semi-floater does not have that, so for lining up the lugnuts there is nothing to set the rim on...I think those observations only stand true for the Cruiser though, Toyota trucks are a different setup I think.

Hope that makes sense...

My '81 FJ40 is semi-floater (C-clips hold the axles on)
My '97 is full floater...

i think what u are saying makes sense

but i'm still not sure i know the rear axle at the end it's black think that does stick out a bit and there are bolts on it but it doesn't stick out 4-5 inches from the center of the rim is there any other way i can tell? does the axles look different or on the door maybe thanks for your time

Like he said , there is a cylindrical shaped protrusion from the center of the wheel. It should have bolts/nuts around it's circumference. It doesn't stick out 4-5 inches from the wheel. It protrudes from the center 4-5 inches.

Another thing to do is to take it back to your mechanic and tell him to check if it's a full floater or not. Or if you've lost confidence in your mechanic go to a different one and ask the same thing.

Did you go to a mechanis familier with the 80? If they think that it's like a domestic FF than they are wrong. The Dana's and stuff have no outer axle seal, whereas the 80 does. It should be replaced when you service the bearings. Call it insurance or whatever.

<If it's a full-floater then the gearlube from the rear diff does NOT get to the bearings.>

Well.... Its not suspose to but some of us have found that the inner axle seal has failed and gear oil has entered the wheel bearings.
