Ok, so here's what had happened......
Most of you know that I was very fortunate to have won the grand prize in the GSMTR raffle last year. Thanks to the generosity of Upstate Cruisers and the sponsors of GSMTR '10, my Cruiser is now sitting a couple inches higher on some OME's.
This year's GSMTR didn't exactly start where last GSMTR left off. I lost a sidewall on the first trail I rode on Tuesday, and my tires just weren't cutting it until later in the week when it dried out, so my M8000 was getting a workout. Still, I had a GREAT time, because it was GSMTR, and that's what happens at GSMTR....a great time.
On Saturday, my buddies and I grabbed a couple beers and headed to the BBQ and the raffle. I took my remaining cash and bought about 60 raffle tickets. Before the raffle started, Cam from IPOR told the story that many of you may know, about Jon Jurlando. He was IPOR's 1st employee and a genuinely good guy, who lost his battle with cancer back in November, leaving behind his wife, 3 young daughters, and a lot of medical bills. Cam did some great things this past week, taking up a collection of donations for Jon's wife, Amelia. Cam generously bought a couple hundred tickets and said that anything he won would be auctioned off after the raffle and the proceeds would go to Amelia.
Lots of cool stuff was given away. My luck wasn't great, though I did win a camping set that'll come in handy. When the grand prize drawing came around, I figured I had my time last year, but of course I wouldn't mind going back-to-back. The grand prize was the biggest ever at GSMTR - IPOR donated an ARB front bumper, an IPOR skid plate, and an IPOR rear bumper for an 80-series Cruiser, and 4x4Connection added a Warn VR-10000 winch.
The numbers were called, and my ticket didn't come up. Oh well, can't win it every year. .... Wait, why hasn't anybody claimed the prize? Goin' once.....goin' twice.......BURN IT!!! Everybody gets another chance! This time, my number came up. I was in shock. No way was it happening again. I was ecstatic, but I knew I wanted to do something. I pulled Lance aside and told him that I wanted to do something for Jon's wife. I told him that I could use the winch, but that as great as it was, I have little use for the 80-series armor. I told him I wanted to sell it all and split the proceeds with Amelia. He went up and told Cam and the bidding began. We were able to raise an additional $750 for Jon's family. The bidders got good deals on some great parts for their 80's, I got a winch and some money to figure out a way to mount it on either my 40 or the Tundra, and most importantly, we raised some much needed funds for Amelia and her daughters.
So that's it. Yeah, I'm a very lucky guy to have had my number get called twice in a row in the big raffle at GSMTR. Ain't gonna lie.....I'm pretty dang happy about it. However, I'm just as happy that I was able to help Jon's family a little bit.
Next year.....3-peat?
