hey guys I'm looking to get new mud terrain tires for my fj60, I only go wheeling on the weekends so id do most of the driving on the road. i also want a tire thats not loud and won't slip in the rain. Ive heard good reviews about the bfg km2 but how does it compare to the maxis?

To be honest, this is a little like asking what the best burger is...thousands of considered answers.

You also have some conflicting desires....

Mud tires are, by definition, good when there are large lugs AND large voids....
and those are inherently loud and less than optimal in rain and pack snow (contact patch)

I think it's fair to say that Maxxis overall will be a softer compound tire that will perform
really well but not last as long, whereas BFG's are know to wear really well/ last a long time
but because their compound is much harder.

I don't know if it's still the case, but it use to be that the BFG KM2 was less than great on
muddy (with any kind of camber to the trail) because the lateral voids all lined up to disallow
grip laterally (which sucks IMHO because that's when you need it the most....)

Heard great things about Creepies...but they are a performance-specific tire that wears
out quick with a lot of road time....spendy tire to be leaving most of it on the pavement.

Understand that this "tire comparison" type of thread has been the bane of this site for
over a decade because there have been so many of them so if others are sarcastic, that's why.

I tend to lean towards Toyo's offerings (Open Country MT's on my 60) and I think they have
a couple tires in their line-up that I would run.

My 2 cents. Good Luck. Do the research for what you want vs. what exists because it will be
a series of compromises with what you're looking for.

i had maxis buckshots on my fjcruiser 5 years ago. i mostly drove on the road. i think they lasted me a good 40k miles. good tire but noisy.

No experience with Maxxis--my Mud Terrains have only been on for about 500 miles but I do mostly local on road driving and driving offroad on sand or mud or snow. So far they have been surprisingly quiet [I had the stock bike tires on it before that were not super close to worn out and were louder]. On the highway it gets noisier but that is a place I rarely drive her--most mud terrain/off road centric tires are gonna whine on the road as the compounds are optimized more for off road than on.

I've been very pleased with the BFGs so far [33x10.5] but keep in mind my experience is not tons of miles and my usage of my truck is pretty limited as far as what I expect her to do.

I have seen the maxis big horn and Creepy crawlers get 50k on light rigs and I got 50k out of th KM2 on my 60 ...bias ply or not I want to try the Creepys nexted

toyo mud terrain seems to answer your questions.

I know you did not ask about toyo...but i have 12.5 *35*17's on my 60. I don't drive mine that often on the pavement "but when i do"... the tires are quite, they are radials and e rated. So anyway the tires are very quite for a mud tire on the road. I've driven through ice storms and snow with them with no issues. Non issue for mud and water/rain.

Any real hard core mud tire with the large spaced lugs is going to howl on the pavement and also wear really bad.

The toyo discovery mt has been the best all around "mud" tire I've found....not its not going to compete with a hard core open lug mud tire off-road but its a good job all around. I will buy the same tire next time for my 60. Around where i live an AT tire just does not work well off-road at all....they turn into a donut/sled in any type of muddy situation.

I have the Maxxis Big Horn's on my 80. While they don't howl like Swampers, I would not call them quiet. I do like them though. But that rig sees more offroad use.

I have a set of 37. in MAxxis Creepy Crawlers and a set of 37 in. Military BF Goodrich tires. The creepys are 2 inches wider with a D load rating, biased plies and GREAT for off road. They are horrible for the highway and loud. They take a while to warm up and tend to follow grooves in the road, so you must be paying attention at all times. I have to keep them aired to 45psi or so.

The BF Goodrich tires have an E load rating and are radials. Much better and quieter on the highway and not bad off road, but would not want to rock crawl with them as they have weaker sidewalls. However, I've been disappointed with their rubber compound because I've had 2 tires crack.

From a monetary stand point , one Creepy Crawler tire costs around $400, while i can get a set of 4 barely used military tires with 98% thread for the same price.

Just put 255/85/16 Toyo open country Mts on my 60. I also had them siped. I could not be happier with them. Much better than the BFG all terrains I had. I live in Montana and deal with just about every condition. I also drive on the highway frequently across the state and I only find them noisy at very low speeds. I cant speak for their performance in the mud or in extreme offloading, but the snow and ice performance has been great. They were amazing this hunting season in the deep snow. Pickups with chains were getting stuck.. i just kept going. I think the siping is the ticket, however may not be the best option in rocky conditions as they may chip and chunk. But if you are not hardcore offloading, i think a siped set is a great choice. These have been the best tire so far i have owned... granted its only been about 3k miles. They are quite a bit more than the BFGs, however.

I have being using buckshots and bighorn on my rigs... they are both noisy..

If you will be rolling mostly on the road, i suggest you to get some bf ko2, best AT tyre known

Look at the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs, healthy lugs and factory siped. They're pretty quiet, clean well, lasted me 40k on two different rigs and they are glue in the snow/ice.

I have the KM2 and with sipes. They are ok in the rain. No experience with Maxxis. They are louder than the AT's I had before.
