when and what application were the caps with the rattle style breathers used vs a flat plug with a breather hole? there, oddly, is a difference and the caps are not interchangeable either.

I checked one of each of mine and they interchange fine. Maybe the cap you have pictured on top is just a generic plug, not a Toyota cap? Hex-head as opposed to square; missing the circular thing? Not an oem part?

Yes as Old Red said they should interchange. And Ibelieve the one with the breather was always on the brake master, I guess since it tends to have more expansion and contraction than the the clutch

except i tried the plug with breather in multiple tin cups and it was too small.

i'll have to look at annie, but i believe the hexagonal caps were also oem, but maybe later. i had a nos master cylinder that i put on in the clutch. i'll check the cap to see if it's hexagonal or square. tried to find the parts available thread, but to no avail. i know i posted a pic of it on the bag there.

there are caps and reservoirs without the breathers that are not compatible with the more common style

The first cap is used with the cast type 25 series and has a 32mm thread size.

The second and third are the common tin cup type 40 series and also has a 32mm thread size.

The fourth one is the odd ball tin cup type, presumably 40 series and has a 34mm thread size.
