All,

I have looked and looked and see similar questions. However, this is the second time I have rebuilt the front new birfs /bearings/seal etc.... Never an issue in the past. My 80 is all stock, nothing built up, stock tires etc....

This time around all went well during the rebuild. 100 miles later, there is a huge grinding sound from the front left wheel. I no signs of rubbing of anything out of the ordinary. This started out only when turning left. It would grind then stop. I rechecked all bearing, pre-load etc... all ok. I even replaced the front left inner/outer bearings again. Same condition after 100 miles.

Today, the grinding sound was so massive I parked the 80.

Any ideas....... I know this has hashed out before but I thought I would ask just in case someone knew of something new......

Thank you in advance!

Dust shield?

What year?
What mileage?
What country of origin?
Does it happen in DRIVE with the truck stationary?
Does it happen in low range?

You have a "massive grinding sound" but you can't find it?

Give us something to work with.

Could I have put the dust shield on backwards? The shield seems to adding to the sound. It looks right..... Today the 80 was not driveable at all. Heavy grinding when turning left was so loud. I guess I will take it all apart on Thursday and look at everything closely. I'm wondering if the new birf is bad and seizing up on the left turns. The passenger front right is fine, no sounds no issues at all.

If I brake, the sound goes away, turn left sound comes back loud. So odd.....

300K, USA Bough new, I'm the original owner. LC80 stopped in drive, no noise. Only when driving or wheel rolling and turning left. Did not try low range. The only change I made with the re-freash was new birfs from LC Parts.net. CDan provided all other parts. Everything was fully lubed to spec.

If you have had it apart then you can put it in the air on jackstands and then in drive with the rims off. Should be able to pinpoint it quickly.

Loose calipers, bad wheel bearing, something scraping *should* be simple to find.

I've installed the dust shield backwards before... Worth a look...

Thank you for the ideas. I will dig into the situation Thursday. Update after I find the issue.

Dust shield was backwards and the caliper was beginning to loosen. Reinstalled correctly and proper torque applied to the caliper bolts. 275 miles since Thursday and all ok. Thanks to everyone for their tips an suggestions.
