@65swb45 sent me his wiper unit recently and I finally had a chance to dig into it. Thanks Mark!

This thing is a museum piece. Damn near perfect, except for a minor issue. Even the contact cover is pliable! I wanted to post the pics for reference in case anyone was wondering what these are supposed to look like.

Does anyone know when these went from TNK brand to ASMO (which is new to me)?

That’s a great point. I was wondering why this wasn’t TNK. Other than the ASMO stamp, this unit looks EXACTLY like the early TNK units I have. These are pics of another set I am restoring. View attachment 3837773View attachment 3837774View attachment 3837775
I take that back. There is one difference in the armature setup on the TNK unit I have. Mine have an additional arm that holds the rotor in. The case looks very similar, and as far as I can tell the gearing is the same.

I can look at the 61 I have but almost positive there are TNK. Had an even early 61 that was pretty much rusted out. Those were TNK. Put them with my other TNK wiper motors that I went there years ago. Should be information about a early electric wipers on the FJ25 in the 25 section. US only had vacuum wipers in the US but was information about electric wipers in other markets. There were only two post as I remember and different than the TNK used on the FJ40.

When I opened the shop in 1990 and started ordering wiper motors, they all came in as ASMO. All the NOS wipers I have stashed away all say ASMO.

So, it would have been before 1990.

Ahhhhh. That explains it. New relatively old stock, although 1990 is now a lot longer ago than I would like.

Update: this unit was frozen due to minor corrosion on the transmission shaft. I took the shaft out after a soak in pb blaster, carefully not to score the brass. Buffed out the corrosion and cleaned the brass tube. Friction ate through the chrome plating in that spot, which then rusted.
@65swb45 do you want me to look into getting this resurfaced? Or just grease, reassemble, and test?

I think that if it’s well greased AND has the little umbrella seal it should be fine. Unlike most 45s, mine lives outdoors. and sometime over the last 30 years the umbrella seal disintegrated. I didn’t make an effort to find a replacement, so what we see is the result.

If you have a source for this seal, please provide one. Otherwise, I guess I will have to look into it when I get the motor back.

I do not unfortunately. In the future I want to look into reproducing them. Will get it put back together and cleaned up tonight.

Just looking at the part number on the back in the first pic, comparing it to what’s in the ‘65 FJ40 parts book, which is 85110-60030 (LHD). FWIW.

@65swb45 All done! Came out great. I actually debated whether to remove the original grease as it was almost ok, but I decided that it could be hardening somewhere I couldn't see. I removed the rotor and cleaned everything, then lubed with lithium stearate grease for its waterproofing qualities. I think this will help protect the shaft in the absence of a good seal. Also buffer the brush contacts while I was at it.

Mark, I will pack up and send along with my carb.

Video of operation. I have a bench top power supply set to 12v. Middle tab is ground. Here I am supplying 12v to the switched terminal, which will operate continuously. Power to the + terminal will operate until the park switch is tripped.

Chris,

I pulled an NOS wiper out of the vault so that I could get you some measurements of the factory umbrella seal/grommet. In the meantime it occurred to me that perhaps someone in the FJ25 forum has already done the groundwork on this. I don’t have the time to look into that. But maybe you should: this is your show.😊
