anyone know a good method to mark the holes so you can drill the holes propeorly where they all will line up with the approporate areas on each side panel. I'm going to replace my side panels with some 1/4 plywood for now. I'm sure there is a tirck or easy way to mark all the holes? Any suggestions. I thought about maybe getting some "tracing paper" and make some kind of pattern. I have both panels rought cut now and wanted to get all the holes drilled without screwing that up. I also cut out some holes for 6*9 speakers. Once I get the panels like I want them....later on I'll fab up some better ones out of nicer wood or see what my options are. Trying to get my "new" stero installed over the weekend.

If you saved your old side panels you can remove the vinyl covering and the holes that held the plastic tabs are in the fiber board. Simply remove the plastic tabs, lay on the plywood and mark your holes....they line up great. Good luck.
I recently replaced my quarter panel trim. A friend was helping me load the back of my truck and ripped apart one of my speakers, so I decided to get rid of the 6x9's in the way back and install 6.5" speakers in the rear doors. I made new quarter panel trim pieces using a piece of 3/32 ABS laminated to vinyl diamond plate. I used the old trim panel as the template for the shape and the location of the trim snaps. I put a piece of tape behind the hole for the snap so the rubber wouldn't be glued to the abs, letting me install the snaps in the panel.
My only complaint--after installation the vinyl has shrunk, revealing a little bit of the ABS. I had done something earlier to replace my tail gate so I knew this might happen, so I let these degass for a week with a few days in the hot sun. Even so, I still got some shrinkage after installation...

I have a store nearby called tap plastics. But it's a west coast chain.
Ok, I'll check that out tomorrow. I still have both stock cargo panels (have this nice 80's look) Not going to trash those until I get my new wood panels setup right. I guess you could always use a piece of carboard to make a pattern, but why go down that road unless you have to.
As you know if you get one screw hole off you can really make a mess of a your new panel.
Where are you guys getting the ABS plastic sheets. I think I'm going to do that later if I can find any, or maybe the outdoor carpet route... thought about staining and applying some urathane just for protection for the wood. But I think the right type of plastic sheet would be hard to beat if its easy to cut.
If someone would be kind enough to donate there old panels so I can use them as a pattern I would appreciate it. I have a 1983 FJ60. I can issue a UPS call tag and have the man in brown come by and pick them up.

hey cali,nice job on the panels and the carpet.i just might check out that outdoor carpet at lowes this weekend.BTW how much material did you end up using?my carpet in the cargo area looks really beat up.great idea.Here are some shots of what I did this weekend. The flash on the camera seems to make the carpet way lighter than the carpet on the floor, but it looks pretty close in normal light. The carpet is Lowes indoor/outdoor grey carpet. I fastened the new panel down with stainless steel bolt ans speed nuts in the original holes. The material is 1/4" tempered hardboard which is super strong as tough so it seemes to be appropriate. I can tell you that the 20 dollar speakers I had back actually sounds really nice, with the added output of the speakers I think I am going to add some damplifier in the rear area.

I'll transfer the pattern of the fiber boards both left and right (minor differences in the hioles) to poster board and send them to you. The passenger panel is one part. The driver's side panel is three parts. I made one solid part for both the left and right. I'm not willing to give up my "patterns" just yet. I may want to repace the current "plywood" panels with somthing better in the future. If you want to chip in a few dollars and cover the postage I'll offer to do that for you. I'll even take some pics to show what I've done if that might help. PM if interested an I share my email address.
Wyo has an '83 FJ60, which means the drivers side panel is a single piece like the passenger side, not a three piece. I have an '85 and it's a single piece. Besides the cutout for the rear washer fluid bag, I'm pretty sure they are mirror images...or at least when I made my panels I removed the vinyl from one and used it as the pattern for both sides.

I don't use the rear washer, but if I do need access to items behind the panel I made, I'll have to break out the screwdirver and remove the entire panel. I just decided to go with one panel for each side. Seemed to be a decent choice at the time. Later on I may look at changing that or going to a different type materail, for now I'm using a plywood type material.

So how are these holding up? I noticed the biggest section available for the ABS from Tap Plastics is a 2'X4' section.

Do you think that diamond plate plastic from McMaster could be used for the rear floor? Wonder what would be a good thickness. I don't think it should be too thick, then the metal trim that holds it down might not be able to compress it enough.
