Hey everyone.

So this is my first shot at chronicling my build. I've been at it for about 3 years now and I wish I would have started this a lot sooner. I picked up my '87 FJ60 from a dude in Charlotte back in 2012 and have been working at it weekly ever since (minus a brief hiatus for a 9 month camping trip to Afghanistan).

When I first picked her up I had zero intention of turning this into an Adventure Rig or an Expedition Build but as time wore on it's become inevitable. This WILL be my family adventure rig.

So far most of the adventures have been local. Namely to Uwharrie, the NC Coast and up and down the Blue Ridge. Next big move I make will probably be a trip up the Eastern Seaboard to Newfoundland or something of that nature.

As the work progresses I'll be posting changes made. If anyone has questions or advice feel free to comment.

Originally she came with all the OEM stuff. Only major modifications her two previous owners did were the 3" suspension lift, put 33" tires on her, a really bad tint job and a hack job attempt at desmogging the rig.

The engine bay was a rats nest of hacked up and re-welded pieces. The air injection rails had been sawed to the stems and welded closed. The exhaust manifold and fuel pump had been RTV'd in place and were both leaking severely, the tie rods were totally shot, and the carburetor was "kind of" tuned. The rear left quarter had a good bit of rust but this was the only spot I could find. The body panels all had dents and dings here and there. Nothing a little bit of elbow grease couldn't fix.

Currently this is what I have completed prior to this year.

- Complete desmog courtesy of Jim C's kit.
- JT Headers (This was a mistake and will be getting fixed ASAP)
- Weber Carb (Surprisingly has worked out rather well contrary to a lot of historical posts)
- Fuel Pump replaced
- Tie Rod end replaced with the Man-a-Fre heavy duty ones.

- Replaced the stock rims with some steel wheels from Pro Comp

- INSERT THE 9 MONTH HIATUS -

- Front axle and hub rebuilt
- 4+ Front & Rear bumpers with Tire Carrier
- Wired Wagon's wiring harness
- Fixed most of the body issues.
- Completed the custom camp box (I can get measurements for anyone with ?s)
- TorFab BMW brackets with power seats from a 2003 325i.
- Smittybuilt Center Console

Over the recent winter holiday I tore out all the original carpet and the original seats. I had done a temporary mod and put 80 seats up front since my original 60 were pretty much disintegrating. I'll be posting photos of the interior tear out and the installation of the new goodies this evening.

As we speak she's currently in the body shop getting a total exterior reconditioning and paint. When she returns this is what I have on the planner in the near future (next 9 to 12 months)

-Reupholster rear bench to match front seats
-Rear seatbelt recall
-Man-A-Fre headers and cat-back exhaust replacement
-Fixing the shotty oil galley plug fix that was already done
-Gamivitti roof rack (Should be ordering here in the next two days)
-Installing my new Superwinch Tigershark 9500SR
-Lightbar for the roof rack and 2 7" driving lights for the front bumper (haven't decided on the vendor)
- RTT (haven't decided on the vendor just yet)
- Fridge - Torn between an Endel B and an ARB
- National Luna Dual Battery IBS System
- 4+ Battery Tray
- Wagongear tailgate lid and side panels.

Here's a few pics of her updated as of this past summer. To include the campbox.

Here's the photos of the interior overhaul I did over the Christmas holiday. I essentially tore out all the carpet to include the rear cargo area and the insulation and replaced it with dynamat and indoor outdoor carpet from Home Depot cut to fit. This was a decision made mainly because I was having a hell of a time finding BMW leather seats in black that weren't $600 and I figured a tan/brown interior would go better with the up and coming green paint job.

The tear down. I ran the power box for the seats so that it was located under my center console. I ran a pretty large guage wire to a bussmann fuse box so that anything extra with low amps (>30) that I wanted to run to the rear of the vehicle I could tie in there rather than having to run it all the way to the battery. In addition in order to put in the TorFab brackets I had to remove the rear heater. It broke my heart a little bit but only took an hour or so to yank the rear heater, bypass it and carry on with the mission at hand.

Painting the lower dash. I have a black upper dash cover that just arrived.

And the finished product! You'd almost think it was supposed to come that way. If it wasn't for the working electric seats in a 29 year old truck. Myself and the wife absolutely love the seat upgrade. The BMW seats are firm but an upgrade far above the original stock seats.

Looks like you have put in some hard work and good mods. Like the seat swap.
Keep the updates coming! Where in NC are you?

I'm out of the Hope Mills don't really want to admit I live in Fayetteville area of NC. I appreciate the kudos. I really should have started this build thread earlier. I feel like I've forgot some decent mods that other readers will be interested in. I'll keep the updates coming. Cheers!

What'd the body reconditioning and repaint run you? and what type of paintjob is it getting? my body is mint but the hood has a few dings after some peckerheads climbed over it to steal my roof rack. Debating sending mine in for some much needed paint

It ran me right around $2500. I went with a basic paint job. Nothing special. Base gloss green and clear coat. Some of the local places quoted me anywhere from $2500 all the way up to $6000 and while I love my rig more than I should admit for the sake of my marriage I couldn't justify spending more on a paint job than I planned on an engine rebuild. Especially if I run the risk of smacking it or scraping it on some branches or rocks when I take it off road.

Some artsy photos from my last trip. Uwharrie to Asheville/Mount Mitchell.

Black Craggy Mountains.

So the Gamiviti roof rack came in Friday along with the interior panels from Venezula. I was a little scared ordering from an overseas vendor that wasn't Australian but they came through and the panels were pretty boss. Took a little bit of time to break down the old panels (the new ones didn't come with the metal curved portion that the OEM ones come with) so I had to do some transplant work.

All in all the panels came out looking great. Hats off to David Perez from VZ! I'll post more pics once my rig gets home this weekend with the new panels installed. I'm supposed to pick it up Friday so it should be a busy weekend putting everything back together plus all the new goodies I have for it.

I used that same tan HD carpet for part of my interior. It's not a bad match for the tan/brown interior and you can't beat the price.

Nice work overall-

I get my rig back from the body shop tomorrow and I'm beyond excited. Here's some photos from it being primed/reconditioned and a quick snap shot of it after it left the booth.

Yep it'll be that green. I'm pretty pumped. It's not a common color on then. A little brighter than I originally planned but the shop is doing a great job on it.

Looks great! Can you give us some details on how you installed the carpet?
The carpet was pretty straight forward. I bought about 75 sq footage of the brown indoor outdoor carpet that Home Depot sells. If you want the exact color code I'll figure it out and post it up here for you guys.

I removed all of the old carpet carefully and used them as stencils. Then once I placed it in the truck I used the original plastic trim strips and stapled them to the carpet so it would sit correctly. It requires some minor cutting to fit once it's in the truck but it's really a weekend job if you prep most of it ahead of time.

In hindsight I wish I would have sprayed the dynamat down with some spray adhesive to make an even tighter fit but I'm ok with how it turned out. If you have any other questions I'm all for posting more info as you need it.

The BMW seat conversion was single handedly one of the best things I've done since I bought my rig. I think I posted above that I originally had some 80 series seats in it but I wasn't satisfied with it.

Big thanks to Adam from TorFab. I literally called him when I was in the junkyard twice to pick his brain on what seats would work and what wouldn't. Their website says only up to '06 E36 models for seats but he clued me in that pretty much any E36 up to 2013 would work. Give him a call before you pull a trigger on the seats. He'll point you where you want to go. And definitely check the local pick n pull. I got my seats with everything including rails and wiring for $130. So the whole conversion ran me maybe $250 tops.

All put back together...

Mostly. The roof rack was recommended to wait a month before I threw it up there to let the paint cure. And as per typical fashion in the process of all my weekend work the alternator finally gave out....so now I'm trying to figure out what type of upgrade to do...

The sage continues...

Doing the interior door panels today. I'll snap some photos when I'm done.

That beast looks awesome looks better with the rack mounted. It's was nice meeting with you.
