I've spent the better part of my morning trying to search for information on this and I'm failing. I've found the one really old post with the "update" mod from Amazon products but there seems to be a bit of controversy in the comments.

I think my MAF is the cause of the hesitation and random missing on my 93.

its 2023, is there still no simple, more affordable solutions to these MAFs?

I find it hard to believe there isn't some new information on this, but I'm not having much luck searching.

Please advice, TIA.

In order to search (and you may have properly done so) there are (3) versions.

91-92 VAF (Vane Air Flow)
93-94 AFM (Air Flow Meter)
95-97 MAF (Mass Air Flow)

Each one is only good for it's year set. I believe you are looking for the AFM version.

The one @landtank created is for 95-97 only.

Other folks with 93-94 have been sending them off to be rebuilt and calibrated by a third party, but there is not a lot of results good or bad in reference to this.

The best way is to start out with a known good one (borrow from a club member) to do proper diagnosis, then send yours off to be rebuilt.

You can buy from eBay or other places, but it's a crap shoot on what you get.

Alright, I appreciate this reply. That's super disappointing there isn't an easier way to get a working MAF in this mess of a tank. Sure seems like there would be a solution that everyone is using for this extremely expensive issue. Ill probably have to send it off then. Any chance you know who I can send it too?

I sent mine to Bavarian Restorations: Bavarian Restoration - https://bavrest.com/index.html

Look them up and you’ll see they service many Toyota VAFMs. I used them once and my issue with hesitation came back and they paid for shipping for the second trip to be adjusted.

I’m sending my second spare to them as well for a tune up.

here is the specific unit for our truck

Stuff like this is why mechanics keep those ancient laptops around the shops. Old versions of Windows, CD drives and serial adapters that laptops in the past 10 - 15 years no longer have. The kind of computer that isn't allowed to be connected to the internet.

I found a box of installation CDs the other day and finally threw them in the garbage. Oh the times have changed....
