A couple of SUVs were missing

I fired off an e-mail asking why they did not consider the G500 and the Toureg (v10 diesel). They're both high-end and off-road capable.

A

Truck Trend just tested the G500 and others. New Range Rover won. 100 wasn't in there though the 4Runner/GX was. Speaking of 4Runners........it recieved a DID NOT FINISH on the sand hill climb (only one not to make it). As I stated before, the traction system in the 4Runner/GX sucks. It's like the Sequoia, too much wheelspin and it kills the power to the drivetrain too. Get a 100 and don't worry about that!

I also disliked MT's jab at consumer reports (peanut butter comment). I like all types of auto journalism, but if I had only one source to base my purchase on it would be CR hands down. I can judge for myself subjective things like styling and refinement. So it's nice to have the hard stats on reliability, resale value, safety, and performance.

Yes I agree CR at least just gives you hard facts and as far a astetics and the like allow the driver to form their own opinions as to what is important to them as an individual.

I liked the comment to the effect that even though the lexus has a solid rear axle it is still a helluva off roader. Makes you question how much they know.
Hahah, that's good. I think a 'off roader' in their case means a dirt road. I like reviews like that just so I know more about the vehicles, I don't pay any attention to who they say wins (well not quite true, if a Chevy loses badly I laugh :D), since it's alway the new vehicle that wins, and always the new vehicle that is named some 4x4 of the year, or truck of the year. Lame...

Let's not be blind Cruiserheads guys? Yes, Rovers are not reliable though IN STOCK form that New RRover is quite amazing. With all the suspension flex (more than an 80 or 100) the thing stays planted! It's traction system, while not an equal to the 100's is in fact very effective. Approach and departure angles are also better. In STOCK form it's a pretty amazing trail vehicle though even Rover owners admit it can't touch a modified rig like a Cruiser or even a Discovery. Modiying a New RRover is also next to impossible so what you get new is pretty much it for good.

I would hope that they're improved with some BMW touches. However, having owned a Rangie, and all the joys that comes with ownership  , I don't think I would ever do a Rangie again. At our local dealership in San Diego, it's a combination Porsche/Land Rover outfit, they have like 20 bays and still it can be a two week wait to get a vehicle serviced. How would you like to spend 70K on a new Rangie, a problem occurs and it needs service ASAP to be driveable, and they tell you it's a 2 week wait. It's nuts. In my opinion, when it comes to vehicle quality, two strong indicators are resale value, and dealership repair activity. I understand in Los Angeles, there are some Mercedes dealers that run an evening shift to keep up with repair demands. I guess if you own a Merc, you see that as outstanding service. I see it as possibly an indication that poor quality has caused repair frequency to escalate, thus justifying a second shift to keep up.

What I've heard about Rover repairs are quite amazing. 3 month wait for trannies (and they drop like flies) and the like. Unreal! You couldn't give me one!

my wife's boss is in the process of being talked into getting a second rr by the dealership, as the first is pretty much in the shop monthly. there's always some bs problem with it that renders it immobile.

This kinda reminds me of what my dad always told me about Jaguars (back in the day) you had to own at least 3. So you could drive one while the other was in the shop and you had a third to canabalize parts from. Think I'll stick with my Toyota. :D

we've got a jag, and it's been very solid, better than the lexus, at least through the first 12 months of ownership.

Ace: Jaguar is one of the rare occurrences where Ford has good quality. When Jaguar was still an independent company, their quality regularly ranked at the bottom of consumer polls. Now, a few years after being bought out by Ford, they are near the top. Having said that, Lexus quality still ranks higher than Jag (#1, in fact), so if you are experiencing otherwise, you most likely either got a good Jag or a bad Lexus.

Shotts: No one was disputing the fact that the new RR had wheel travel, they were disputing Motor Trend's assumption that a solid axle is a hinderence off-road.

Jaguar X-Type made the top-5 list for cars with the highest rate of depreciation in the first 3 years of ownership. If I'm not mistaken, I believe it shares most components with the Park Avenue.

Please NOTICE I said "back in the day" that would be indicative of pre-Ford ownership. Yes today Jag is a very reliable car from my understanding that was the reason I qualified that comment.

Park Avenue is a Buick.

It shares the chassis with the Lincoln LS and the new Thunderbird.

i understand that you were speaking of older jags. i just wanted to point out that jag/ford has done a good job with these newer products and really backs them like they should, in the even that they do have any failures.

our lexus experience has been slightly marred by a bunch of p.i.t.a. luxo-oriented problems. no major systems and certainly nothing mechanical, just crap that turns a simple old change into a two day visit to the shop.

our jag's no that old, but for the money (they're practiclly giving them away) i can't find anything remotely comparable. and awd to boot!

the X shares platforms with the european mondeo. the fact that it depreciates quickly is reflected in the actual selling prices. the sticker is comparable to every other overpriced euro sedan, but they are leasing them for less than a honda civic and sellin gthem for $7K to $8K off msrp. where else are you going to get a leather/wood lined, all wheel drive, v6, power everything, all service included, four year warranteed vehicle for less than $25K??? the local dealer is leasing them for $199/month 24 months, property tax included. you cannot find a better transportation value.

BTW the S type shares its rwd platform with the linc ls.

CDL disables TRAC. You can spin the tires all day with the push of a button.

The Motor Trend test crew probably thought a "Center Diff Lock" was a button you push if you're parking your car in a bad neighborhood.
