Is it possible to remove the Lexus Badges and replace them with what nature intended? If so, are extra mods required or do Toyota badges fit right onto old LX mounts?
Badges?? What badges? Mine all clean shaved no L, no LX450, no etc... but, just the one in the back on the rear hatch (The middle L) may requires some bondo, primer, sand paper and computer paint match to cover 2 holes.
The grille and upper rear decklid emblems should mount the same way. The 4WD and the long tailgate emblem is stick on, and they are pure hell to get off. A word of warning....be prepared to do some tall talking if you get stopped by Buford T. Justice. Your little "emblem fetish" could appear as something else when the logos don't match the make called back from dispatch when they run your license plate.
As having had four TLCs in the past,I too a not wild about the Lexus logo as I am not a status guy and could do without the "gold package". I have considered replacing the "gold package" with the black pearl logos on the 40th. I don't however want holes exposed on the lift gate if indeed the Lexus logo has pins and the LC logo does not. They look to have the same foot print. Another option would to have the gold logos coated with the same process as the 40th, but I do not know of anybody that does that. Anybody know of a source for refinishing the logos?
I just removed my Grill "L". The Toyota emblem's screw mounts may be in the same location and the elliptoid the same shape, but it would have to mount over the "L" that is an intricate, non-removeable portion of the grill - so you'd have part of that L shape showing behind the toyota badge. Or you could swap out the grill, but I don't think it's a direct replacement.
I also removed my gold grille emblem.
Unfortunately, I only discovered that it looks fine without anything (basically a toyota black emblem shape support) after I spent like 2 or 3 hours polishing the gold off the removable part.... :whoops:
It is not, the grille on an LX450 is wider and the headlights narrower, the grille, headlights, and lower valance (where the turn signals are) would have to be swaped over,
BTW johnny4ever, both a 96-97 Lexus LX450s and 93-97 Toyota Land Cruisers are FZJ80s, if you look in the front passenger side wheel well at the frame you will see the frame number, it starts with FZJ80.
The LX grill and headlights are different than the LC IIRC. To replace those is starting to get spendy (non-USA headlights and all). I would have to see what the sombrero looked like with the "L" support behind it....might look ok, might not. I am leaning toword refinishing the gold "L"s to a metalic black and removing the "LX 450" (also gold) self adhesive ornament from the lift gate like LX Extreme. Are we sure that the rear "L" has pins that fit into drilled holes in the lift gate?
who cares if it has a sombrero wearing bean or an L? all that matters it that fzj-80 is stamped into the PS frame rail. Besides, anyone that knows cruisers will know you've got an lx instead of an 80. spend the money to do some upgrade, instead.
Yes. Two holes in-line with the lower leg of the L. There are two rubber/plasiic receptacles that fit into the holes in the liftgate, the pins, in turn, fit into the receptacles. It't not a mechanical fastener. I'm guessing it's a LEXUS QC thing to keep their emblems level. The mechanical fastener is double-sided. As mentioned earlier, it's a Bitch to get off. I heated it first w/a heat gun (careful or you'll melt the clear-coat), applied 3M adhesive remover and slowly worked it off with my fingers. Do not get impatient and use a pry tool. You'll scratch the paint.
Good info. Thanks. I am not as wound up about the "L" so much as the the gold. To change all the Lexus features to LC spec. would be prohibitively expensive. I would much rather (and will )spend the $$$ on functional mods. I was just thinking that the black pearl logos would look outstanding against the cashmier paint and be less showy.
